"It will be hard to secure." he says, "but I intend to agitate the matter continually." And he must agitate strenuously and effectively, if he would show his good works before the next republican convention of his district. PROF. A. A. Cleveland again appears In print :n the quarterly issue of the State Historical Society with an instruc tive article on the "Social and Econ omic History of Astoria." Prof. Cleve land is doing some splendid work for the city In this particular line. IT is now time to purchase material for decorations. Regatta headquarters are full of flags and bunting, and many a good idea can be obtained In the mat ter of decorations by calling there. ENCOURAGING GOO-GOO-ETES H. G. Van Dusen, fish commissioner, eame in on the steamer on Wednesday, -and, of course it will not be in order for any of our citizens to go trout fishing after dark while that gentleman Is buzz Ing around, although by doing so they help the salmon industry, for it Is well known that salmon trout have a won derfu appetite for salmon egg and de vour thousands of them in our rivers. Patterson, formerly edltof of the Hep- pner Gazette and recently register of the land office at The Dalles. Both gen tlemen are competlent and thorough newspaper men and will no doubt out the Astorian on a paying basis. The Herald welcomes the two gentlemen to Astoria and believe that there will be a better understanding and more hearty cooperation under the new man agement with the press of the city than heretofore. The Astorian has In th past pursued a reckless policy and has antagonized the best business element of the city. It has been the most un popular paper ever published here and the change In the management will be welcomed by everyone who will 'gladly support a morning daily run in the In terests of the business men and people and not a person it organ for a cannery or a church.
