EINGER Hermann has promised the
First District people to work for an ap

"It will be hard to secure." he says,

strenuously and effectively, if he would
show his good works before the next
republican convention of his district.

The Morning Astorian has been sold
to Walter Lyon, formerly private sec
retary to Governor Geer, and Otis a.
Patterson, formerly edltof of the Hep-
pner Gazette and recently register of
the land office at The Dalles. Both gen
tlemen are competlent and thorough
newspaper men and will no doubt out
the Astorian on a paying basis. The
Herald welcomes the two gentlemen to
Astoria and believe that there will be
a better understanding and more
hearty cooperation under the new man
agement with the press of the city than
heretofore. The Astorian has In th
past pursued a reckless policy and has
antagonized the best business element
of the city. It has been the most un
popular paper ever published here and
the change In the management will be
welcomed by everyone who will 'gladly
support a morning daily run in the In
terests of the business men and people
and not a person it organ for a cannery
or a church. Mr. Elmore, former own
er, is a gentleman, and had he been a
practical newspaper man and In a po
sition where he could control all- de
partments of the.Vstorian It would have
been different, but there were too many
strings attached to the office, all of
which were antagonistic to the best In
terests of Astoria and Clatsop county.

Full particulars were recently receiv

to the terrible hurricane which visited
those islands and in which over iW
lives were lost. Such a loss Is appall

have lost their lives from Indigestion,
dyspepsia and constipation and other
stomach troubles. The number hs.
however, been considerably reduced
since the Introduction of Hostetter's
