NINTH ANNUAL REOATTA
Only five more days, and the regatta
will be on. Preparations at this a'age
re well under wav. The committee in
charge has been industrious. It has no
complaint to make of a lack of coopera
tion. There remains of course consider
able to do yet and united effort un
til the event is over assures the
most enooessful regatta ever held on
Columbia's waters.
Features have been provided never in
eluded iu the program before. Local
people have for the firut time entered the
racing contests. Full crews will be here
from Victoria and Vancouver, B. C. and
. three crews will start from San Fran.
Cisco. Sunday. A Chinese diagon has
been secured and visiting queens will at
tend from the interior cities of Eugene
Salem, Albany, Roeeburg, Grants Pass,
Ashland, Corvallis and Portland. All
the Willamette valley points have been
regaled with the regulation summer car.
nival. Portland has had her confetti
throwiogcaraival, wherejtbe crowds have
seen the girls ride the camels, the snake
eating man, the three toed boree, double
headed calf, three legged lamb, the wooly
head of a negro poked through a hole in
a canvas inviting the white brethren to
satisfy their race prejudice at five cents
per throw. Some such street attractions
will be seen here, but it is the aquatic
sports people from beyond the mount,
ains are coming to see and it is that part
of Astoria's program that will excel.
The reports from outside are that great
crowds are looking forward with rosy
anticipations to tue regatta.. The name
"Astoria" is a synonym for good time
about regatta time and the prospects are
they will not be disappointed. They
should not.
Distinguished personages have been
invited and they will come in their best
bib and tucker, with the assurance that
all is ready for their reception, and now
is the time for earnest preparation.
THE frequency of suicides, as report
ed through the press, suggests the ad
visiubliity of more rigorous precaut
ions in the "ale of poisonous drugs.
There are other methods of self-destruction
than by the taking of poison
but the tendency of suiclde3 seeifis to
favor that route to eternity. The dis
eased mind, contemplating s?lf-murder

THANKS
The new owners of the Astorian as
sumed control of its columns yesterday.
Tiie Daily News extends congratula
tions. The change is beneficial. It puts
newspaper men 'n charge where chaos
reigned. The new owners say their in
vestment was based on faith inAstoria's
future. One of them Is in a positfon.by
previous affiliations to facilitate that
destiny and at the same time build up a
great Columbia Basin paper. It Is to
be hoped the Astorian, in its new phase
will cultivate the influence of the In
land Empire. It is a prime factor in
Astoria's high destiny. Shipping its
grain from this port means everything
to that region, to Portland, to Astoria
and the entir-; Basin.
The Daily News welcomes Messrs.
Patterson and Lyon to the Astoria field
of journalism. Their accession is a
gain for the city. Astoria Daily News.

I wraa very much alarmed about It, was

It proved to be all that is etaimed for
