SHERIFF HONEY INJl'RED-Shw
Iff Rnney of South Bend met with an
accident at Long Beach yesterday that
will likely keep him laid up for some
time. The official was working on the
railroad track when he slipped and fell.
He was unable to rise without as
sistance so was taken to his home. He
was found to be suffering from a frac
tured ankle which, while not serious,
will necessitate careful! nursing.
TAYLOR BOUND OVER Thomas
Taylor who was arrested on Monday
on complaint of Henry Salmlnen who
accuses him of stealing a suit of
clothes, failed to convince Justice Good
man yesterday that he only borrowed
the glad rags, and he was bound over
to the circuit court in bonds of $200,
which he did not furnish. He was ac
cordingly taken back to Jail. Tears of
humiliation streamed down Henrys face
as he told the sad, sad story of his life,
but the court has seen similar water,
works in action, and he had another
story as well as the borrowed suit of
clothes in mind when he entered the or
der. COMMERCIAL CLUB MEETS At
the regular monthly meeting of the di
rectors of the Comerclal Club held last
night, Frank Woodfield tendered his
resignation as secretary . B. J. Pye
was elected captain of the bowling
team with authority to select a team
to compete for the regatta trophies.
Arrangements were made for complet
ing the gymnasium. Several new mem
bers were admitted. By vote, the
board decided to extend indefinitely the
special membership fee of $2.50. The
regular fee is $10.

Mr.1' Moody was returning to the city
from the Lewis and Clark and upon
reaching an eminence about a quarter
of a mile from the Say he noticed a Are
on the bridge and hurried to the spot.

on a sill. Obtaining pall of water at
the keepei'a house Mr. Mood quick
ly extinguished the lire. It Is supposed
to have been caused v the stub of a

, DROWNING FATALITY The four
year, old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jatxl
Hanhela. of Gray River, fell Into the
river Monday while at play with his
brother Gustave and was drowned.
The little fellows were arranging a fish
ing net in some manner when the fa
tality occurred,- Edward slipping and
falling Into the water. The other boy
did not understand at first what hud
happened, and. not until he realised that
the boy did not appear on the surface
did he raise an alarm. The coroner was
notified of the circumstances, but no
inquest was held. The funeral will be
held today.

ticularly the king of Norway.
WORK OF THE HOSE TEAM The
few days remaining until the regatta
should cause local athletes who are to
compete In the events to redouble their
efforts In training. The members cf the
hose team have been doing good work
but Captain Brown Is concerned that
tnoreof the men do not turn jut at the
tests that are held In the tvenlngs.
There are 18 men who are supposed to
be In active training but more than half
t these do not engage in th trials.
The team Is well equlaped. be well or
better than any that are scheduled to
appear here, and concerted action
means an easy victory. The team
work Is now being supplemented by
foot races, this latter practice being en
gaged In every morning &t an early
hour.
WHERE RACING WILL BE GOOD
VUitors to the Oregon state fair this
fall witness the greatest racing ever
seen in the state. Salem business men
have raised a purse of $2000 for 2:17
pacers to be raced for on Salem day,
which has 30 horses entered. These
horses are from Idaho, California and
Montana, and it is expected at least 20
of them will start, furnishing the larg
est field of high-class horses ever seen
on the Pacific coast. Portland, too, has
contributed a purse of $2000 for 2:20 trot
ers to be raced for on Portland day.
This race has 27 horses entered.of which
most of them will start, making two
of the greatest racing events ever held
this side of the Rocky mountains.
The tender Heather made a coast
trip yesterday, planing a whistling buoy
at Tillamook bay and a channel buoy
at Nehalem bay. Returning the Heath
er took on board the engineers at Till
amook rockwho have been engaged In
placing the donkey boiler taken to the
rock by the tender some days ago. The
Heather reported the sea to be very
smooth ith a heavy fog falling.
