FAITH in Astoria ftnd Oregon Is our only excuse for entering the newspaper field In Astoria. With this Issue we assume control of the Astorlnn, daily and semi-weekly, the entire plant having been purchased a a basis of operations In our chosen field. In addition to the Astorian we have secured membership hi the Asso ciated Press Association and acquired control of the Lower Columbia country no fur as that corpora Hon' Interest gees. The Astorian will be conducted on the theory that this region Is enti tled to the news of the world and the world is entitled to the news of this sec tion, and no efforts will be spared to put this theory Into practice. The best Interests of a newspaper and the community in which it Is maintain ed are intertwined and Inseparable, and it ts not without a sense of the re sponsibilities and duties that attach to a paper of the age of the Astorian that we presume to guide its destiny. Astoria and the Lower Columbia country In common with the entire northwest, have important interests to guard, resourses to exploit, Industries to develop, and to contribute to these ends what lies within a newspaper's sphere Is the purpose of the present management. The Jwiper will continue republican In politics.'-The proprietor .have no ene mies to punish and no private nor cor porate interests to serve, and public questions will be discussed in the paper's columns without bias. Delays.incident to ctiange of manage ment, leave a temporary handicab, which will be overcome in a day or two. GENERAL MILES . THERE is something aWn to sadness as well as injustice in the scant courte sy 'accorded Gen. Miles by She press of the entire country on the occasion of his retirement from the position of commander-in-chiePof the army of the United States. It seems to us that his career has been honorable; that hie record as a warrior compares favorab ly, with that of his compatriots, and lhat his personal life has been as free from blemish as his record as an army officer. True, his discretion was not as keen as his sword, but like thousands of other men who have risen to the pin nacle of eminence in their chosen pro fession he only lacked tact and Judg ment to clothe his opinions in the lang. uage of a diplomat In that brusque, decisive and sometimes abrupt manner that indicates the character of a man who says what lie means and means what he says the gallant officer, through the columns of the public pres subscribed his name to bold utterances and thereby incurred the displeasure of his superior officers. There are friends of the administrat ion who will not approve the slight to which General Miles was subjected by the president and secretary of war. A man with as brilliant an army record as the retiring commander-in-chief cer tainly deserved more than a formal or der of retirement on relinquishing the duties of that honorable office. Men 0hner0us Ulcers ROOTED IN THE BLOOD. After the age of 45 or, 50, when the vital powers are naturally weaker, it is noticed that a hurt of any kind lieal3 slowly and often a very insignifi cant scratch or bruise Aimftll pimple cam9 on , but gave ma no becomes a bad Ulcer or pa,n 0r inconvenience, and I should have forgot At thil time of ten about it had it not begun to inflame and itch ; it sore. At iins lime 01 wonW bled a uul th(m ,cab over, but would not life warty growths, heal. This continued for some time then the Cancer moles and pimples that JVPBAtt Vtt&S&Si have been on the body t0 lv9 it a fair triai and it is remarkable what a almostfrombirth to inflame and Jester, peared entirely. This was two years ago ; there are and before very long Sffi&WS2$jSh are large eating ulcers. " "" " Whenever a sore or ulcer is slow in healing then you may be sure something is radically wrong with your blood. Some old taint or poison that has been slumbering there for years, is beginning to assert itself, and breaks out and becomes a bad ulcer and perhaps the beginning of Cancer. These old Sores are rooted in the blood, and w hile washes, soaps. Salves, etc., keep the surface clean, they are not healing. A bjood and a tonic to is needed, and 1 poison is so that this treat it, and tilcers of every kind quickly yield to its wonderful curative prop erties. - If you have an old sore or ulcer, write us all about it, and medi cal advice or any information you may desire will be given by our physi cians without charge, jyf SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., ATLAHTA, CA, MA1THOID ROOFING The new high gride roof ing for low cost work. But It is not as a diplomat or oppon ent of the administration that fair minded citizens will judge General Miles. The pages of American history will mete out the full measure of honor able mention due him, and the credit that is denied him by the press of the country today will be Inscribed In the volumes, written by future historians, the men who perpetuate the memory of the nation's heroes. The old soldiers who for twenty year scouted "the -west side by side with Gen. eral Miles in the days when the Indians made scalp bunting their proud sppn will not forget him In his retirement; neither will the old veterans of the Civil war, and the younger veterans of the Spanish-American war. At the advanced age of sixty-four General Miles is entitled to retirement; 't has been honorably earned, and all who propose to be patriots of the United States will wish him long life and happiness, and something more ap propriate and generous than post-mortem eulogieh from the powerful press of a mighty nation. THE selection, of Prof. H. S. Lyman, county superintendent of schools of Clatsop county, to the position of head of the bureau of education of the Lewis and Clark fair will be received with ap proval throughout the mate. Prof. Ly man is wel fitted by experience to as sume the duties to which he has been appointed, and in his selection the state of Oregon has assurances that the ed ucational branch of the exhibit will be complete, comprehensive and carefully compiled. EVERY UODF is engaged in the pleas unt diversion of singing hail to some, thing or other these days. In Seattle and on Puget Sound generally it is ail hail the sockeye: in Astoria it is hall to thequeen; In Colorado it is nothing but 'hall, the chunks of pre pared ice being ten inches long, and in Portland it Is hail to Morris, the great Indian pitcher. THE native Instinct Is still strong in old Geronlmo. He must hunt. Hav Ing been converted, he has announced his intention of hunting souls. This news will be received with less con sternation than his expedition twenty years ago "In search of the scalps of white men. SEATTLE and Portland ore fighting another bone of contention. TM. time the dispute Is over the question: i Which city possesses the most arlnt ... . . . t . crooks. Thus far Seattle is enuueu Jto the honor. SALEM makes the proud boast that there Is only one vacant store room in the city. Astoria can make a similar claim In the matter of rooms for rent. Only there are practically none in the city. - EVEN old Geronimo, captured twen ty years ngo along with 200 of his war low by General Miles, wishes his cap tor all the peace and Joy that merited retirement deserves. WHAT Is the difference between the police of Portland and the people of Greater New York? The latter are nev er entirely asleep and the former aw seldom awake. AN Eastern paragrapher rises to re mark: JThe necessity of the reorgan ization of the salmon combine indicates plainly enough that the fish didn't bite.
