PAPAL THTONE IS GORGEOUS
POPE PIUS IT IS THOUGHT WILL
NOT BLESS PEOPLE FROM OUT
SIDE AS HALF EXPECTED.
. Rome, Aug. 8. By special permission
a representative of the Associated Press
was allowed to enter St. Peters tonight
to observe preparations for the coro
nation sen-Ices tomorrow. In the center
isle a wide space has been fenced off
for passage of the cortege. The ttfmpels
have ben richly decorated with red da
mask fringed with gold1. The papal
throne rises majestically at the furtnei.
end of the great building, being a be
wildering mixture of gold, red and sil
ver and appearing altogether too gor
geous to be sat in. The portico of St.
Peters has been closed by great cur
tains to prevent any one from looking
in as the pope passes which would seem
to confirm the statement that Pope Plus
will not bless the people from outside
the balcony as was half expected.

OVER 600 LIVES LOST.
Full particulars were recently recelv
ed from the Samoan Islands In regard
to the terrible hurricane which visited
those Islands anil In which over 600
lives were lost. Such a loss Is appall
