AT BEAR RIVER MOUTH The
company of Northern Pacific survey
ors that hAS been working in the vicin
ity of Ihvaco. has moved to the mouth
of Bear river, headed toward the Co
lumbia. The surveyors are now within
eight miles of Chinook. They started
from South Bend and have surveyed
the route through the Xasel country.
Just where the line will strike the
river is only speculation yet, but rrom
the way they are headed it now looics
as though they would come out at or
near the old town of Chinook. The line
Is surveyed down the river from Ka
Uma to Ilwaco, and It Is thought the
company Intends building from South
Bend to the Columbia, eight miles east
of Ilwaco. and then follow the river
to Kalama, where the main line will
be struck. The survey has also' been
made down the river Into Ilwaco, and
the intention seems to be to build a
branch down to Ilwaco and out to the
beach to Stackpole harbor to tap that
country. .

Lnport, 1nd., August 3. The Indiana
j Prison Board, In session at Michigan

One of the most recent innovations
In straw sailors Is from Paris. It Is
satin straw, very smooth, with rather
high bell crown. ' The brim Is rolled
and narrow at the back, if has a band
of white leather, enameled In pale col
ors, such as pale blue, pink, pale olive,
etc. The design Is not oriental, but
suggestive of mosaic.
An odd little paper weight for the
desk takes the form of three small and
very realistic looking volumes moulded
from metal and colored to represent
leather.
Coral and turquoise are latest and
most popular choices in the neck beads
so much worn at present. The strings
are of a size to fit closely around the
collar. ' They add a touch of color that
Is very desirable with a white costume.

OVER 600 LIVES LOST.
Full particulars were recently receiv

however, been considerably reduced
since the introduction of Hostetter's
