In view of this, and also of the fact ' that Its officers devote time, energy and money to the building up of the city commercially and industrially, often to great personal loss and inconvenience. It should be the aim of every business man in Astoria to become a member of the Chamber and to co-operate with the officers in the laudable object for which they as individuals and the Chamber of Commerce as a body are constantly striving. Organised effort on the part of our business men is the sure way to accom plish things for the city, because it in dicates a rendition of harmony and feeling of interest among them that stands for something broader and more patriotic than a lack of public spirit made manifest by dwarfed . member ship in the one body that should wield the greatest amount of Influence in the upbuilding of the city than any similar organization. The Chamber of Commerce numbers among its members some of the most progressive business and professional men of the city; its officers are en tbusiastic and enterprising, and the field before them Is rich of resources and inviting. But there is need of a larger membership and it is to the business men on the outside that this appeal is made. The interests of Astoria and the busi nes men of Astoria are identical. HON. Singer Hermann visited Tilla mook recently to confer with " the Chamber of necessary improvements to the Tillamook bar and harbor. Hon. C. W. Fulton of Astoria will be able to enlighten -.he Hon. Binger Hermann on other necessary harbor improve ments also when next the gentlemen meet.which will probably be abopt the time congress convenes. " The State of Oregon is fortunate in having two such representatives at Washington. The rivers and harbors committee will un doubtedly learn something more about the navigable waters of the state than , ieretofore. , 1 THE problem of advertising the Lew is and Clark fa4r in a manner unique and profitable Is perplexing the fair di rectors, i The press "bureau should out line a systematic ' program for the important branches of the work and ended Judiciously.: Experience has undoubtedly will, end money should be no object, provided it is expended judi ciously. Experience has' taught every successful business man that advertis ing, pays. -' y.f,t . THE state supreme court will soon pass upon the constitutionality of the Initiative and refendum amendment, and already the most ardent champ ions of the movement are expressing the opinion that the high court will re- verse the Judgment of the lower court. ' GENTLY, dear reader, gently! Only ' a ypdgyaphical error in saying that the debt assumed by the Chamber of Com merce Monday night was $214,560. The -i amount Is 1214.50. The selection of Senator Wehrung to ; to take charge of Oregon's exhibit at at the St. Louis exposition is meeting v with cordial .approval in the state press. : f, :. -r ' ' f OUR motto: Astoria and Clatsop ' county first, the rest of the world af terwards.
