Fee Beyond the passage of a few bills lit tie was done at the brief meeting of the city council held last night An ordinance Introduced by Nord strtim pmiioaed to roJse the license fees of hawkers from 15 to 110 a day, or from 120 to 1T0 a week. An attempt to le this under suspension of the rules fulled on account of one vote against It. In connection with the Improvement of Sixteenth street from Commercial to Irving, a petition was received from the pmierty owners affected, asking that the first block south of Commer claJ be filled In, and that the whole street be Improved with crushed rock. This was referred to the streets conv tulttee. A communication was received from the county court urging the connection of Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets near the reservoir so as to Join with the Ne halcm road. The court also showed the iidvlnbniry of Improving Suinmlt or Niagara avenue westward to Eighth street, thus giving good connection be tween the Lewi and Clurk and the Ne hnlem roads. The communication was referred to the committee on streets. City Treasurer Dealey reported re garding the park fund that the total amount of taxes collected lust year was 118.541.96. of which a twenty-first part was ISiS.OS, but that some of this had been on account of delinquent tuxes, and thnt he consequently consld ered 1S00 would be a fair sum to pay Into the fund. The report wrs referred to the ways and means committee. TO INVESTIGATE OIL FIELDS President Allen of the Push club yes terday appointed a committee yonslst lug of August Hlldebrand, Albert Dun- bur ami H. S. Lyman to tavesttgiite the reported oil fields In the Deep Riv er district. The committee will thor oughly examine the prospects, and If a favorable report Is made the club will proceed energetically In the matter of the development of the section. The date of the examination has not been definitely derided upon, but the member may go over today. COST A LITTLE MORE. MUCH LUMER JETTISONED Having Jettisoned 100.000 feet of lum ber, the steam schooner Sequoia, leak ing and almost disabled, managed to, make the Columbia yesterday afternoon from Tillamook, where she bumped on the bar aa she waa leaving for San Francisco. The Sequoia was making water so faat on getting out of Tilla mook that the deck load was thrown overboard and It was decided to run for Astoria, On the way the Voeburg fell In with the schooner, and offered to' tow her to Astoria for 1350. but this amount was considered too high by the captain of the Sequoia, and the Vos-" burg acordingty took the passenger fiom the schooner and proceeded on her course.
