" THE ASTORIAN PUBLISHING CO HIS- BROTHER'S KEEPER? Since Cain first asfced thVques tion: "Am I my brothers kcepjri." it has been iterated and reiterated by all classes of people in all ages. In varying terms it has beenlhe're fuge of the thousands that have helped their neighbors ,on the road to perdition or have stood idly by when atf' outstretched' hand might have upheld the weak. It is one of the most cowardly, as it is one of the readiest, evasions of the duty that ihould lie upon all men in this world where fates are so closely in terwoven. It is so easy to say that others should look out for themselves- "No one is compelled to enter a saloon or gambling house;" there fore these places should be left to flourish unrestricted. Just as sen. sible to leave an open pitfall in the street. . No one is compelled to fall into it; we knew it is there; there fore it would be sheer -waste of time for us to fence it round. The old question is the expression of a feeling that is all too common in private, municipal and political life. When" the cry of '(every man for himself, and the devil take the hind, most" is the motto of the people, the devil is more than likely to get the whol : crowd. An interesting detail of the at tempt to blow up the Cunard liner Umbria has just come out. :. When the steamer was outside Sandy Hook a New York paper sent- a wireless message asking if there was much anxiety on board as the result of the plot that had been discovered. As this would have been the first in timation to the passengers of the narrow escape they had had, the captain kept the mattej a secret, and it was not until the ship arrived at Queenstown that the people on j If so then vour system is out of there is a fiav somewhere in your constitution, and a possibility that you are losing health, too. Thefalling-off in weight may beslight, but it makes g, wonderful change in one 's looks and feelings, and unless the building up process is begun in time, vitality and strength are soon gone and health quickly follows. U you are losing weight there is a cause for it. Your blood is deteriorating and becoming too poor to properly nourish the body, and it must be purified and enriched before lost weight is regained. It requires something mora than an ordinary tonic to build np a feeble constitution, for unless the poisons and germs that are lurking in the blood are destroyed, they will further im poverish the blood and weaken the system, and you continue to lose weight . In S. S. S. will be found purifying and tonic properties combined. A New Vork bank has decided to keep opeti until ?io' p. m. every night. The district 'to which it is situated is largely given over to fashionable restaurants and places of amusement, so there" is little doubt that the bank's innovation will bring it greatly increased business. It is evident, too," ' that the. , idea - will spread,' and it is not unreasonable to suppose, that in a few years we may find banks in all the larger cities that will keep open to accomodate night patrons. four ferooklyn boys were detected inside a store by a policeman. When; the ; latter .endeavored to ge through the window to arrest the kids, 'the sash fell on his neck and faade hint a prisoner. ' The cop was cooped, and he had to beg the boys td release him. AWAY WITH HARMONY. "Speaking very soberly," says the Atlanta Journal, "we do not oclieve the Democratic party can ever hope for harmonious action un til William Jennings Bryan is finally extinguished." : A large number of people will agree with the Journal in its very natural - conclusion, - and another large number of people would re gret very much the elimination of Mr. Bryan from the ring of the Democratic circus. His retirement would certainly eclipse the gaiety of the nation, and in these days of the strenuous life all the gaiety that can be found should be conserved.
