' THE ASTORIAN PUBLISHING CO.. -. THE BACKWASH. ; The '"moral wave" in Seattle, cul minating in the grand jury investiga tion, has at least served the purpose of giving the people there something to talk about It has also afforded a good deal of quiet amusement to the chiefs of the underworld that in Seattle do not hesitate to protrude their heads into the upper world and to take some considerable part in' managing the affairs of both. While the jury was actually in ex istence, open gambling in the city was not to be found, although to those that knew there was plenty of the behind doors kind. Now that the jury's paper bullets have ceased to fly, doors are once again open, and the little games are running with all the confidence that knowledge of the character of the city's authorities Kives the trusting gambler. Thi- seems to have aroused a sort of pro test from some of the citizens not a very strong protest, to be sure, for most of the people in Seattle are just now engaged in denouncing the Bremerton people for allowing a few comparatively harmless saloons to be, kept running in their town. When Uncle Sam has attended to this matter, however, Seattle will then have time to talk about the state of affairs in her own bailiwick. Doubtless there will be lots of talk, and equally without doubt there will be blessed little done. The only kick coming Fish Warden Van Dusen from the shad. against will be Mrs. La-ura S. Webb, Vicc-Proidait of Vomen't Democratic dob of Northern Ohio. FFlHERE ABE MANY m sickly women be tween the ages of 43 and 55, but there are very few invalids over 55 and 60 years of age. The change of 131a coming to a woman near her forty fourth year, either makes her an invalid or gives her a new lease on life. Those who meet this change in ill health sel dom live ten years afterward, while a woman who lays aside the active ' duties of womanhood in health sel dom fails to live on in happiness, years after she has passed 60. This is truly a critical time. Mrs. Laura S. Webb, of Toledo, Ohio, recognizes the change of life as a dangerous period and she also has faith in Wine of Cardui. She writes : "As I had always eeen troubled more or las at the menstrual period, I dreaded Un.Ltuma.Wtl. WINE of CARDUI PACIFIC COAST COMPANY ; c 0 For Steamer, Commercial and Family Use Orders Promptly Executed. COCK1FO0T OF SEVENTH ST SomiieJ Elmore & Co., Agts. According to the Eaher City Deraorcat there are a number of young men in that town anxious to secure wives, and by way of encour aging home industry they want them from Baker City. As there are lots of: girls in the town, and most of them are pretty, it looks as though the matter was up to the young men themselves. Surely they don't want the girls to offer themselves on bended knee, in Bertha M. Clay style, while they murmur: "O Clara, this is so sudden." The secretary of the Los Angeles Y. M. C. A. is coming in for much adverse criticism because he refused to allow Corbett, the prizefighter, to play on the association's handball court, t in reality tne secretary's tion appears to be more com mendable than otherwise. The pugu. list lives in an atmosphere that is not conducive to the best growth of character, and is not likely to prove a profitable example to the youth that frequent the Y. M. C. A. and are liable 'to be led away by the glamour that surrounds the success fut fighter into thinking that he is a good person to copy. The premier of France is now ex plaining why he allowed the automo bile race to be held. Explanations will satisfy the people fai less than would the wholesale slaughter of the criminals thst tcok part in the race itself. The Syracuse woman that tried to make two fighting bulldogs break away may recover from her injuries but will be scarred for life. Moral: Blessed is the peacemaker that uses discretion. The cut of 1 20 in the through pas senger rates to Dawson from Seattle shows that with a little more compe tition the: fare to the Klondike will approach a reasonable figure. Portland people seem to think that they have been eating em balmed beef. If they didn't guess it at the time, the results are not likely to be serious. Richard Henry Stoddard, the poet, left an estate of only f 2,000 which shows that a poet is even less likely to "die disgraced" than is Carnegie. It begins to look as though Cleve land will have the honor of leading the Democratic party to defeat against Roosevelt. the change of life which was fut .pprosching. Thus vis iting with a friend 1 noticed that ah was taking your W me of Cardui, and she was so enthusiastic about it that I decided to try a bottle. .ex perienced1 some relief the fint month, 10 1 kept on taking it for three months and now I menstruate with no pain and I shall take it off and on now until I have pasted the climax, I do not dread it now, as I am sure that Tour Tine of Cardui will be of great benefit at this time." Wine of Cardui is the remedy to re-inforce a woman against the shock that comes with the change of life. It re-establishes healthy functions after years of suffering. In doing this it has saved thousands of suf ferers just in time. Do not wait until suffering is upon you. Thor ough preparations should be made in advance. Begin the Wine of Cardui treatment today. , A million suffering women have found relief in Wine of Cardui. TELEPHONE MilN 661 MAjLTKOIO KOOFDYO (Pi Made In California wnere materials are produced.
