PRESIDENT OX THE XEGUO. ' '-If a man is good euough to be hot' at beside me, he is g-xw enough for me to give him a square deal in private life. More than that I will give no man, and less than that I will give no man." This is the way President Roosevelt defines his position on the negro question, and his word: re concise and definite. The statement was-made in thanking the negroes of Butte, Montana, for a souvenir they had presented to him. What the language lacks in elegance it makes up in force. The president is nothing if not tactful and politic, as well as wise. He suits his speeches to his hear ers, whether they be college presi cents or cowooys, ana seems w ao it with unequalled skill. It is .1 i i . evident that in his triumphal journey through Montana, where he once roughed it years ago, he was able to easily touch the pop ular chord which put every citizen in tune with the march of the victorious chief. THE DIG FOUR." Mitchell, Fulton, ' Williamson, and Hermann! What more can Oregon want in the way of repre eentation? If things do not come eome our way it will not be because we have not been good to onrselves in the matter of choosing able men to consume tlte interests ot our state at the national Capitol. If the knockers will keep their hands off, or possibly in spite of them, this state should in the next ten years enjoy very beiieficient results from having their wise and efficient leaders where they can do the most good. In such matters as river and1 harbor improvements, artifi cial propagation of fish, forest pre servation, irrigation and dozens of dther important questions relating to this state, and in all the great affairs of ' other states and of the country at large the influence of the Oregon . legislators will be potent. But able legislators alone cannot make a good state. J t is high time . a lot of Oregonians MISS FAY LEE, President of the ShaReapeariaa Club, Kansas City " Your booklet came to my home liits message ai health when I had suffered with headache, backache and bat-ing-downpauu. Iwasweik, nervous and hysterical and had not consulted any doctor, thinking it would pass away in time, but instead I found that the pains increased and were more frequent. I de cided to try Tine of C&rdul and in a abort time wa much improved. It teemed to act like a charm. I kept up the treatment and the result ' wa most satisfactory, orda fail to ex press oif frratirud for the suffering that is now tared me- I am in fin health, physically and mentally. I can only lay 'thank you', but there it tnucll mote in my heart for you." , , , JTIEABING-ROWN pain are the K I worst that women know. If If I you are suffering from thi trou ble vou need not be uncertain about it. The pain in the abdomen and back that feel aa if heavy weight were pulling down on the nerve of the stomach are 'bearing-down pain". They may not be particularly severe at present tot they are growing worse. That headache which nearly drive yon distracted &ow i caused by the terrible WINE of CARD IfuJ Vav Is. I - . . J woke im to the fact that if this 4 neck of the woods is to take her rightful place in the front rank it must be because of the sterling qualities, the lively enterprise and the manly and wotnaly 'virtues of her citixeng'iia much asjby reason of her great natural resources. It may be interesting to some who have slipped "in just a few words'' of writing in a package of paper or merchandise mailed'at tit lower rates to their friends, that the abuse has become so common that postmasters have been in structed to examine snch package's and report, if writing is found, to the department officials. The next the senders know will be a visit from the deputy 'United State marshal! with a warrant for arrest, and the result of having to pay a tine of 25 and the cost of the action. while onr .government strives to protect our people from frauds and fakes, Uncle Sam, by the act of Congress, continues to perpet rate the "free seed" fake upon farmers. It is announced that this year over $270,000 will be expend ed in the free distribution of 40, 000,000 packages of vegetable and flower seeds. Hie greatest need of any city is civic pride on the part of its citi zens. People who have pride in their town willworkforits interests, they will say a good word for it on every possible occasion and they will carefully and diligently labor to core its every defect. It re quires intelligent effort to success fully build up a town. Reports from southern China where a famine is raging, say the men are selling their wives and children in order to obtain food. It would be a fine thing if the hungry women could sell their husbands, but, perhaps, nooody would buy them. EFFECTS OF THE TORNADO. People of Gainesville Begin to Realize the Result of the Disaster. Gainenvi!lc, Ga., June 2. The O00 in habitant of this city have tonight just begun to realize the extent of the ap palling disaster of yesterday. It now seems that the death list will not be much short of 100, perhaps Home what over that, with a considerable number of dangerously wounded whose chance for recovery cannot be calcu lated. Following is a probable sum niary of the efTects of the tornado In Gainesville an dits suburbs; One hundred killed; 660 wounded, of which probably 20 will die; 800 home less, their residence being wiped out of existence: property loss of : about $500,000.
