The other day at Tacoraa,, aajr the
Butte Int;r Mountain, in gathering of
prominent republicans of the state of
"Washington. President Roosevelt eald:
,I would rather be ail , president for
three and a half years than half presi
dent for seven and a half years." It
was an utterance worthy to be given
wider publicity than it has yet achieved
It ranks well up with "1 would rather
be right than be president." As a dec
laration of independence it is quite as
stirrintr as the latter famous phrase.
In other words, Mr. Roosevelt made it
clear that so long as he Is president he
is president In fact. He Is not a man
of kitchen cabineta or powers behind
the throne, and his Tacoma epigram
shows that he will . tolerate not the
slightest Interference by "interests" in
the conduct of his administration. Can
didate though he Is for re-election, at
this early day he has the nerve and
manhood to make & declaration of this
character. In some candidates It would
mean ruin; In Mr. Roosevelt It means
added strength. " ' I

RUSSIA'S GRAND. OLD MAN.
The venerable Toisoti continues to be
a thorn in the side of the caar, criticis
ing with all his old-time daring. He
has just issued an arraignment of the
government for permitting conditions
which make possible such outrages as
are being perpetrated,-upon the Jews.
Tolstoi enjoys the distinction of being
the only nun in allthe Rustias who can
do that and escape Siberia. To lay a
hand on the old patriarch would be to
precipitate an uprising among his dis
ciples which would be very uncomfort
able. NOT UNKNOWN IN THE WEST

A LA BRYAN.
Mr. Bryan has at last "tumbled" to
the significance of the Cleveland boom,
says the Statesman. He says it is a
cloak under which David R. Francis,
of Missouri is to be hidden until the mo
ment comes to spring the Missourian's
name upon the democratic convention.
Hereupon Mr. Brayn proceeds to part
company wilh David R. Francis and
all of his friends. He does not like even

Grow Cleveland is said to like.
In this way, it is suggested, a man can
