Flsh'ermaa Towed Many Mil Out to
Flaherman Towed Many Mile to Sea
Boston May 20. Captain Horace
Hlllman, an Edgartown flsherman, has
been towed by a maddened whale many
mile out to sea. - Captain Hlllman and
a Portuguese sailor were in a boat off
No Man's Xand," south of Martha's
Vineyard.
Suddenly a whale leaped out of the
water within 15 feet of the boat and
brought down his tail with a fearful
swing. Then the whale started but to
sea, fouling the lines which attached
the nuts :o the boat and towing It sea
ward. Captain Hlllman estimates thut
the whtle towed the boat a( a sieed
of 30 miles an hour. After being towed
for four hours the boat waa freed. The
captain wa, two days getting buck to

were on Columbus avenue, an automo

Oakland, May 20. After being track
ed across the continent, Julius, A. Jorg
ensen, absconding cashier of the Copen
hagen Bank of savings of Denmark,
and his companion. Miss Johanne Moel-
ler, whq was bookkeeper .In the same
Institution. Have been arrested here on
a warrant charging them with embez-
sling $80,000 from the Copenhagen bank
some time last month. The man is
also accused of having deserted his
wife and eloping with the woman In
whose company he was when taken
in custody. . : . ( ;

Indications" Are That Fair Bill Will Be
Safe.
Salem May 20. Tomorrow Is the last
day for the filing of the referendum
petitions on bills passed at the last leg
islature. Several petitions were filed
late this afternon on the Lewis and
Clark fair bill, but not near enough
signers have yet been secured.- In the
matters of the portage railway, the
Eddy bill and exjnfptlon tax petitions
are not yet filed, though It is under
stood almost enough signers have been
secured.

PORTLAND CAR HELD UP..
Portland, May 20. A ctow ded e lectric
car on the Vancouver line of the Port
land railway was held up tonight by
three masked men near Woodlawn.
The robbers did not display any wea
pons but went through .the car and
secured about $175 in cash and consid
erable amount of jewelry. The sum of
$25 in iah and a watch was taken
from the conductor. The robbers es
caped through the underbrush.
