A bowling team from the Portland ivmrnerrial club arrived In the city on lat night' train and were promptly escorted to the Commercial clubroomt and the pin began to tumble. In the contest H. J. Opening of the baseball season on the lewer Columbia will take place today between Astoria and Cathlamet, at the latter place. The Astorluns have not had sufficient Held practice to Insure good team work, but the player have all been In the game so will doubtless put up a still contest. Cathtamet has one of the, best organised teams any where In this section and expect to carry oft the first game easily. (Astor Ian don't think so). Trenchard will open the regular law and probate court tomor row, and on Wednesday the commis sioner court will convene. The most Important business of the session will be thi opening of bids for the Lewis nnd clary drawbridge. No proposals have as yet been filed, but It Is expect ed thnt .several representative of bridge .building firms will be on band at the time -with plans and prices. Propola will also be received for re building the bridge across the Neran tcum at Seaside. Various petition will lie presented for county roads. Includ ing one for Improving th road frctn Warrenlon to Flavel. ANITA REACHES MANILA. The gasoline schooner Anita raa reach ed Manila In safety, after a passage of 50 days from this port. She left the mouth of the Columbia In the early part of March. The voyage waa a tjulck one and no advice have been received tending to show that the craft was at any time In distress. The An ita Is admirably fitted out for the Phil ippine coasting trade and la expected to do a good business. Besides 100,000 feet of lumber her outward cargo con sisted of a lot of machinery, tools and Implements. BUILDING STREETS. Contractor Palmberg now has under way he construction of new streets on Fifth. Jerome, and Fifteenth. E. A. Gelding has the contract for Seventh. These are all to be paved with crushed atone from the county stone crusher. W. A, Gooding Is grading some lot In Alderbrook and using the earth to fill In on the Cedar atreet Improvement, for which he ha the contract. Misa Turner teaches in the picturesque school house on the Wal luskl and live at the Bartoldua home. The young lady will go out to her school this evening and will return next Tuesday to attend the teacher' Insti tute. . Mr. and Mr. C. B. Trescott left last evening for Tacoma after spending a couple of days in Astoria the guest of Mr. anl Mrs. Samuel Elmore. Since their wedding In San Francisco last De cember Mr. and Mrs. Trescott have been doing Europe, visiting London, Paris, Rome, Nice, Monte Carlo, Ham burg and manv other cities. It Is pos sible that Tacoma may be their home in future, but they will return to Aa torla in a couple of weeks. - ' :tv One of the no3t pleasant feature of the season wa held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Griffin on last Monday evening In honor of their 15th wedding anniversary. More than 50 of their friends were present and a very enjoyable evening waa spejit.
