THE ASTORIAX PUBLISHING CO., CARNEGIE'S GIFT TO THE NEGRO One of the best and most timely of Mr. Carnegie's benevolence is that .which Rave to Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee institute $600,000 In 5 per cent bonds of the United States Steel cor- poratlon, yielding 30,009 annual rev eaue. Not for its size Is it commendable o much as for the nature of the en terprlse it will assist that of giving to the black race the opportunity for Industrial and intellectual enlighten ment. In his letter to the trustees of the institute Mr. Carnegie writes of Washington and hi work thus: 'I give this without reservation, ex cept that I require that suitable pro vision be made from the gift for the vants of Booker Washington and his family during his own or his wife's itfe. I wish that great and good man to be entirely free from pecuniary cares, that he may be free to devote himself to his great mission. To me he seems one of the greatest living men, because his work Is unlque;the mod-rn Moses who leads his race and lifts It through education to ever bet ter and higher things than a land over flowing with milk and honey. History is to tell of two Washingtons, one white, the other black, both fathers of their people. I am satisfied that the serious race problem of the south is to be solved wisely only through Mr. Washington's policy of education which he seems to have specially been born a slave among slaves, to estab lish, and in his own day greatly to ad vance. Glad am I to be able to assist this good work In which you and oth ers so zealously labor. Andrew Car negie." - The work that is being done by this and othir Institutions for industrial education in the south offers the best iromise of the advancement of the ne gro to the status of prosperous, intelli gent and respected citizenship which, for his sake and his white neighbor's sake, he should be brought as soon as possible to occupy. The same work is heeded for the Ignorant and poverty stricken white children of the south, and no nobler use of wealth can be made than that to which Andrew Car negie devoted this handsome gift. MED FORD SUCCESS DISCON TINUES. With the 52nd number of volume D, Charles Meserves' paper, the Medford Success, makes its bow and discontin ues. The "Success" has been the neat' est little paper in the slate and appar ently well managed and edited, but, from the tone of its farewell message. Medford must be afflicted with a dis ease not unknown hereabouts. It com mences like this: " GOODBTE. With this issue the Success will be discontinued. The reason for tills action Is that an energetic pa TAlJTKOII KOOFMO lj: yyaatiat.f aaaaaajaawaaaaaaaaftaaayg Made in California where materials are produced. The lowest priced roofing- made. And then Medford Is handicap ped with the feeling that the town has such superior dantag8 that no effort Is necessary to make It the big city of southern Oregon. There Is In Medford too muvh of the spir it of tle rich man's son who would do nothing for himself because he felt that his advantages would en able him to out-distance the poor boy .not realising that the poor boy's hustling would eventually be his undoing. Medford will sit around until it Is too late to do any thing. Ar-d then the editor shows up at length the numerous opportunities the cltlsens of that slumbering city have let sUp and how they mlg'rt have made a glorious ealn by proper effort. Here is an Item which has been going the rounds of the press whi-.-h is as ap plicable in this section as in anyther: Who sympathised with you when your little child Was sick?" Was It your home merchant or was tt T. M. Roberts of Minneapolis? Who carried you last winter whan you were out of a Job and had no mony ? Was it Montgomery Ward & Co., jr was it your home mer chant? When you want to raise money for the church or for some needy per son" In town do you write to the Fair store In Chicago or do you go to your home merchant? How much does Sle gel. Cooper A Co. give toward keeping up the sidewalks of the town or paying the rtltnlst?r's salary? When you were sick how many nights did Sears, Roe buck & Co. sit up with you? When your loved one wss buried was It your home merchant who dropped the tear of sympathy and uttered the cheering word, or was It Marshall Field & Coi of Chicago?" The moral Is obvious. Why send money abroad w"hen you can do as well at home and help your home enterprises? This is a good principle to follow up. . Not satlsflJd with, providing for the payment of double taxes next year, the legislature also repealed the $300 exemption clause, so that after this year there' will no longer be a dollar's worth of poor man's property exempt from taxation. This will come as a hardship to some, as the bed can Be sold from under a man unlessJhe pays up. An Astoria woman thinks that if as the president says It is the duty of every family to bring up from two to four children, then Roosevelt should be charged with the responsibility of about two dozen as he Is proportionate ly as well able' to do them justice as most fathers are to raise a family of two. - The spectacle of Andrew Carnegie building a $1,500,000 temple of peace to house the czar's Hague tribunal, an J Russia at the a? me time trying to steal nil of Manchuria by force of arms if need be, is an incongruity not calculat ed to inspire confidence in the czar's sincerity.
