Rural mail delivery and the good roads movement go side by side. The efficiency of mail service depends upon the condition of the roads, and this condition has never been wore appar ent than at the present time when the popular demand for more extended rural delivery is increasing every day. The mail service Is a government in stitution and there is a growing ten dency to look to the government for assistance In the closely allied road movement. Towns are plainly unable to bear the cost, and but few states feel able to fully meet the situation. But the government which has spent forty-four million dollars for improving rivets, harbors and canals, paying the entire cost of such works, might eas ily spare an equal amount to help transportation by land. A plan was submitted to the last congress by which the government and the state each pays one-half. The state could then levy a share of the expense upon the counties and towns, bring the actual cost down to a very low figure Such a measure would add to the at' tractlveness and value of country prop erty and the facilities of farm life would be greatly increased and it is a project the representatives of the people at the national capitol should support heartily, as they will when made aware that the people are In ear nest on the subject of good roads built by government assistance. . Worry, not work, - kills the man. This old jroverb still holds good and is even growing better. President El iot of Harvard not long ago gave a prof itable address on work. He called it "the foundation of civilization,' which makes nations as it does individuals. As a constant use of the muscles caus es their development, so by the con stant use of the brain we get the re sults of thought. A man in health re ttiiis his health longer by working. It is the most indispensable, the most belrful, medicinal and remunerative thing in this world. It may be over done Or Underpaid, it may be misdi rected; but it gives a zest to every thing, and brings a satisfaction that is not to be had at any other price. There is a growing belief that the St. Louis exposition will be a big cam paign object lesson In favor of repub lican rule dring the presidential year, as it will show such abundant evi dences of prosperity all over the coun try that every intelligent man who sees it will preceive the advisability of let ting well enough alone. In fact, the national apple-cart is so abundantly loaded that it requires the strength of the elephant to haul It. The democrat ic donkoy could not keep the wheels moving and would have no other re cou' than that of kicking the cart and upsetting the load. The state experiment station of Min nesota Is mixing things up In a way that looks plcayuntsh out west. They have succeeded by grafting In the pro duction of a two-story combined po tato and tomato plant which bear po tatoes on the roots and tomatoes on the vines. Such double dealing savors of the occult. - According to President EHkt there are nv? essentials to real nappiness: family lite, productive labor, appetitie. outdoor sports and reading. An ex change says the distinguished educator omits health, but how can a man have an appetite without health? Chicago should be a city after the president's own heart. Out of a total of 74,608 babies born in Illinois last year, no less that !7,347 saw the light of day in that city. It is at least en titled to favorable mention. The San Francisco Dry Dock com mission has Just completed at Hunters Point one of the finest dry docks In the world. It Is large enough for two batt'eshops at one. time and can be pumped out In two hours. RUhard Croker has explicitly stated hat he will never return to New York. Which helps the average of civic mor ality quite perceptibly. Salem bartenders challenge the barb ers to meet them o n the diamond for a match game of basball.
