Bent by jmall, per year, in advance $1 CO The Astorian guarantees to tt ad vertiser the largest circulation of an; newspaper published on the Columbia ; River.' THE ASTORIAN PUBLISHING CO. RIVAL" DIVORCE MILLS. .V leading industry In South Dakota la the business of providng divorces. Jealousy has broken out at the prae- ; tical monopoly by Sioux Palls of this Industry, and the cltisens of Canton have met together and determined to advertise their city aa possessing pe culiar attractions to tourists in search of divorces. Canton, Its citizens claim, possesses one great advantage over Sioux Falls in the absence of newspap er conesiondens against whom there is a city ordinance. It expects upon this ground alone to prove attractive to wealthy and prominent seekers after divorce, who do not wish their business to be published far and wide in the quarters from which they hail. " The "matter has been taken up by the cit izens of Canton very much as the en couragement of tourist travel is taken -up elsewhere, and no efforts are to be spared to attract people who desire dl "vorces to the town, and to make their stay pleasant for them while they are there. This may sound grotesque, but it is the logical outcome df the anoma lous condition of the law of divorce in tha state. Such a manner of at tracting population or gaining wealth is hardly commendable, but a state which maintains laws of such laxity must be made up of a people more or less shifty and none too sensitive. EAST ROADS. The little misunderstandings relative to the -late debate on socialism in As- toria are as nothing compared with the halo of blue cloud which rests over the valley Institutions of learning on ac 1 count of the borrowed "oratory" there delivered and purporting tj be the real stuff. Orator Smith of McMinnville captured a nig gold medal at the late contest in Eugene by making use ot a brilliant speech belonging to Senator Vance of North Carolina His college is now debarred from participation In Ihe next, event. On a previous occasion McMinnville lost to N'ewberg by coming up against the same sure thing game. What is the matter with Oregon? Must the eloquence of the rising generation be supplied second-hand by the effete east? Do the Oregon colleges teach an inferior grade of honesty and man- hood? How about the Judges who ' were not discriminating enough to de lect the misfit thunder of the plagalr ists ami to award the laurels to the contestants who spoke from the heart, " if there were such? It is well that the shameful prizewinners have been wide ly published, that the youth of Oregon may not again forget that the true road to fame Is not always the quickest route, and success won unfairly Is most unsuccessful. ARE B.VIW.UNSALES NECESSARY? Are there too many bargain sales? xAt one of.the recent state conventions a prominent dealer said mere were, It looks, however, as if conditions In each town or each community would be a big factor In deciding the question. says the Commercial Bulletin. Bargain sales are as necessary in modern day advertising as opening of the doors every morning or hanging a sign over the door. No matter whether they .ire a good thing or not. they are here as a strongly fortified custom and here to stay. How many bargain or clearance sales should a merchant have in the course of a year? A good authority says not more than four. One every three months helps keep the stock down, cleans out the odds and ends, satisfies the bargain hunting public and main- tain's the merchant's reputation for en- teririse. This idea means that the rest of the trade campaign must be conducted on every day advertising and a straight hustle for business. Every merchant should begin his spring work by sorting up his stock and getting it In the best of shape. The consumer is looking for new goods and new things as soonas spring opens. The dealer who leaves a pair of felt shoes where bis customer can see them is bidding for a reputation as a behind-the-times merchant. The grocer who has not his canned goods, dried fruit, and every other line on which the demand In spring In creases, well to the fore, is bidding for the same name. Spring is the time for new possibil ities, new ambition, and new trade, and the dealer should prepare for It thor oughly. - TO CURE A COLD IN ONE DAT Take Laxative Eromo Quinine Tablets.
