The America Can com' pany la out of some alaea and has been forced to cut tin at a waste to keep go ing. Likewise salmon shipped from Astoria has lately arrived In New York US daya after shipment. The railroads are either enjoying an Immense bust ncas or the various strikes are respons ible for the holdups, probably the for. nter. Otherwise preparations for the fishing season go on galore. Fish' boata, gasoline launches, steamers, schooners and skiffs are being launched ready for business, and all Is to be In readiness In six more days for handling the targe early run which Is exiwot- ed. Wanted In Portland. afaBJt 9 It has developed that the two men who were detained by Sheriff Llnvllle Tuesday evening on suspicion of having stolen a lot of wire that they had In their poaseiwlon are wanted In Portland and warrants for their appes- mce there were Issued yesterday. The tell tale evidence sgnlnxt them Is a knife which one of them had In his posses slon and which was Inscribed with "J. PN. Collins, Portland. Oregon." A Port- lander waa held up not long ago and his knife, bearing that name, was tiiken from him. Two men answering to the description of the prisoners have been terrorising Portland for some time and the frequent holdups there are at' trlbuted to the scamps now In custody An officer arrived from Portland lust night to assume charge of the men and they will, in all probability, be taken to Portland today. History ol Oregon One of the most valuable histories of Oregon yet written has recently come off he press and Its author Is Sup erlntendont II. 8. Lyman. The work Is published in four volumes and bears the title: "History of Oregon, or the Growth of an American Btate. Tt t published by the North Pacific Publish ing company. His outlook ta from the standpoint of universal Interest, and, while the touch of provincial enthusi asm and even of domestic affection may be traced all through his work, there Is no let-down from the manifest purpose to give the record Its true historic per spective. From One Who Debated Astoria. April I Editor Morning As- tor inn In this morning's Issue of The Astorlun there appeared an Item from J. M. Hughe complaining that tlm Budget had quoted his name as having taken part in the debate last Monday night at Labor hall. Instead of mine. He is perfectly Justified In hav ing the error corrected, but he Is not Justified when he Intimates that those who took part In the debate are social ists. Debating societies are schools of education, and It a well known fact that the members are sometimes called upon by the chairman to take the side l they are not In sympathy with a fact which Mr. Hughes knows well. In the . debate referred to the leader on the j negative failed to appear, and to make . the debate as Interesting aa possible, under the clrcumitancem, and us no one i else seemed willing to take hla place,' I volunteered, not as a socialist, but as I one -who was seeking knowledge. Mr. Hughes calls the debate a wrangle. which Is an Injustice to the society and to the participants. On behalf of the society, I ask you to Insert this In your pnper. , Chas. Hough.
