To make up the dif ference between the aggregate price sked by the non resident land lord and that offered or considered right by Irish tenants, the British gov ernment will generously supply a cash fund of J60.000.000. This big expendi ture is justifled by the British secre tary for Ireland in the statement that under present conditions "the landlords of Ireland were being ruined financial ly, the tenant were being ruined mor ally, and the taxpayers of England were paying $7,000,000 to the Irish police, which largely was needed to deal with Illegalities arising from -the land ques tton.M Redmond, the Irish leader, while "not positively committing himself yet, made no opposition; neither did Camp-bell-Bamnerrmui. the liberal leader. The will of the late ex-Senator Col bert was stamped with the sane and wholesome personality of that gentle man, say the Ledger. Mr. Corbett ad lived long. His conduct had been marked by wisdom, prudence and thrift. The result waa that although while active in affairs, he had been quick to answer the demands of char ity and to sanction needed expenditure, old age found him with a fortune. The distribution of this fortune he planned on a scale that is a new honor'to'hls memory. The wife, who had long been his companion, was remembered in an ample provision of cash, and a liberal Income. Other relatives are to receive large amounts, "ut not on a magnifi cent scale. Servants have not been forgotten. Worthy institutions will have substantia! addition to their resources. ' ; The dominant feature of the will, as It strikes the observer, is the absence of effort to keep the accumulations to gether and to pass them down intact, there is no foundation laid for the branch of the aristocracy of gold. The money la to be scattered, not wildly r without aim, but In the best possible manner. - It will find its way through inanny channel Into useful service. H Never corrodei. beneficiary will be elevated by hi or her slnre above the necessity of work, or. at least of care In conniving the allotted portion, and yet the sum to each will mean Independence of the fin est" sort; freedom from poverty with out the burden of excessive wealth. It Is refreshing to observe an Instance where will Is a tokenof unselfish neiw, and serves to carry Into effect the actual force and character of one who pawes from the scene. " Canada doesn't K'liave In having her young men poisoned .slowly and made iiwane by degrees, through the con sumption of that deadly paper-ooverod pcstileni.-e, the oisrarettc The house of commons, at Ottawa, has Just passed a bill, at the Instance of the women reformers of the dominion, which in hibits the importation.' manufacture and sale of cigarettes in Canada. Sir Wilfrid Laurier was among those who opposed the bill, and vihen asked what he was swing to do about it said Jokingly,- "I suppose 1 shall have to give tip smoking." The reiJonef adds that Sir Wilfrid "never uses the weed." Evi dently not. The consumption of these little rolls of paper with their myster ious contents, cannot truly be called smoking. At least no connoisseur would admit that it was. It is simply a process of fumigation, and strongly suggestive of the act of disinfecting. Brooklyn Standard-l'nion. About as hard an accident as one may read of was that at Pocatelio, Ida ho, the other day, where young man Just started to work as helper In the Oregon Short Line blacksmith shop had his hand crushed to a pulp under a heavy steam hammer 40 minutes aft er entering the service. Shanklanil. who is a street car conductor on the Woodstock street car line, residing at 710 .Elsworth street, Portland, says: "Some time last, fall I began having considerable trouble and annoyance from a dull, aching pain in the back over the kid neys. I think It was caused from the constant shaking and Jarring of th car. I thought ot first It would dis. appear as quickly as It came, but thi was not the case. Learning of Doan' Kidney Pills I procured a box and took them according to directions. The result was entirely satisfactory.
