In a long Inter view with a member of one of the larg est of the Alaska canneries, quotes him s saying: "There Is going to be em ployment for a great many less fhher men In Alaska the coming season than for yeara past. I am advised that many little canners are seeking the usual financial assistance for starting up their llttlo plants, and to my knowledge most of them are being re fused. The unsatisfactory markets of th? year have lost for us the faith of some good frle.ida. But while I know for a certainty the Alaska t-ack for 10113 Is to be a light one, Puget sound will largely compensate for It by put' ting up a heavy pack of sockeyes and humpbacks. We Alaska poeker have been unable to raise . the prices by holdliuT, and In a great many sales, after oaylng Insurance snd storage, have afterwards sold at leas than the the goods cost to put up. As a result,! only the cheapest fisheries I mean those which can be operated the most cheaply will be operated this year. In order to meet the conditions. Puget sound, with Its traps and more liberal laws, will b th great rendetvqus tor the fishers this year." Secured Hatchery Sites ; Fish Warden H. Q. FOUND IN DOWNTOWN SALOON Young Resident of Grays River Takes Deadly Drug While in Sober Condition. A Mr. Burns, a logger,, until lately employed at Salren's camp on Grays river, was sent to St. Mary's hospital lost night from the Standard saloon, with apparently but little life left In his body. Hs condition Is due to swal lowing raw opium, but why he ate It Is not explained. At an early hour this morning he was still alive, but Uttle hope was entertained for bis recaov ery. Everything possible waa done for him, but he had been for two hours under the influence of the drug and bad evidently eaten a considerable quantity. Enough was found In his pocket to kill several men. Since coming to Astoria Burns hps stayed st Jeff's place on Bond street, and left there early last --evening ap parently all right, although having drank some. He entered the Wigwam saloon on Astor street about I o'clock. where he exhibited the drag be was taking and stated that he had obtained It from a friend named Murphy. He liter went Into the Standard, where he soon became drowsy and laid down on the floor, where Officer Thompson found him after he bad lain In a stupor for two hours. The officer summoned Dr. Pllklngton, who removed the man to the hospital. Burns is about 25 years of age and Is charcteristlc as being a very good fel low. He has no friends or relatives here so far as is known. No reason has been given for the rash act other than ignorance or bravado. It Is claimed thai he was not Intoxicated at the time. MEETING OF PUSH CLUB President Allen Will Appoint CommitteV to Arrange ' Regatta. The Push club had a meeting last night Owing to Intervening circum stances theassoclatlon has not lately met as regularly as In the good old former Ume and the enthusiasm. which was wont to be apllled about In a manner truly picturesque and with substantial results, has been perforce bottled up. Last night's meeting was a strong reminder of what bat gene before. X communication from Frank V. Drake of the Information bureau was read. Tha communication dealt with the proposed exhibit to be placed in the Union depot. The club took no decisive action on the matter during the meet ing, but the secretary was Instructed to write Mr. Drake that the matter would be considered later on and a de cision in the matter would be reached. A communication from the Civic Im provement league was read which ex pressed a desire that the association take the league under its protecting in fluence, it being the wish of the lat ter body that the former save It from Impending annihilation. The sense of the club as expressed last evening was that this would not be a practical move and so the matter was laid on the table, The advertlsng madlum proposed by the O. R. & N. Co., which entails an expense of 50 cents to those who obtain space for marketable land, wot by mo tion heartily endorsed. The question of a regatta for next season was brought up and by motion it was decided that President Allen ap point a committee of Ave that will se lect t committee from the citisen body to adopt plans for the fosthcomlng event. After a spirited dscussion as to the final dlspostlon of the fatr site, a mo tion was put and carrlid that the park commission on. behalf of the cty relieve the club of the site at the same price conditioned for between the club and Mr. Shlvely, and also that the orig inal contract be assumed by the com mltton. A vota of .hanks was tendered C. 'VP.
