Here is a que for young ladies who
mar not yet have found their proper
ephere, and who posse the common
sense neefssary - become trained
nurses the cheerful, vivacious, help
ful kind. Coming from Pr. Lorenx.
the famous Vienna surgeon whose
American visit proved so highly bene
ficent to hundreds of little sufferers
from coivginltal hip dislocations, the
following tribute to American nurses
means much. Said he: "I am maklpg
every effort In the hope of some day
seeing German trained nurses the equal
of those in America. The American
trained nurse is certainly ideal. I am
afraid, though, that at first our people
will not believe what I say of this fine
body of assistants to ' medicine and
health. With us a trained nurse Is a
servant, with you she is a lady, either
a woman or girl of most excellent ed
ucation. I don't wonder so many rich
gentlemen marry their nurses after an
acquaintance full of sunshne, health
fulness and mental Improvement. We
need the American trained ntirse as
much as the new big hospital now In
the course of construction here needs
the glorious American improvements
which I admired In different parts of
that country. I shall work hard to
obtain these improvements for the in
stitute. I shall work harder still to get
nurses after the American pattern.'
While the statements do not insinuate
that a girl might trs'n thus to catch
a wealthy Invalid husband, or might
marry him aflar sunshining him to
convalescence, nor that there is any
dearth of eligible husbands for the
matrimonially inclined ladles of the
land, yet it Is apparent that here Is
j
' a field of possibility which may bring
tope to the heart of many young la
dies who may not know what to do
with themselves, and with It the cul
tivation of cheerful, sunny natures,
"and the ability to minister skilfully
to the needs of the afflicted, than which
there la no more praiseworthy a vo
cation. If any woman can go ahead
of the one who satisfies a man's stom
ach, perhaps the one who can nurse
him to health will gain a higher place
In his affections.
i- In explanation of the enormous es
tmate for the .equirements of the Brit
ish navy for the ooming year, amount
ing to $179,184305, Admiralty Secretary
Arnold Forster gives the following de
tail:' After mentioning the various In
creases the secretary said the admiral
ty proposes to complete this year six
new battleships, 11 srmored cruisers
and one second-class cruiser, two
stoops of war, four' torpedo boat de
stroyers and three submarne boats.
He also asked the house to sanction
the commencement of three battleships
;cf very fomidable type, four first
'elass and three third-class cruisers,
four very fast vessels to be used as
scouts, 15"iorpedo boat destroyers and
ten submarine boats. He mentioned
that 31 obsolete vessels had been with
drawn during the year 1903, the larg
est number on record, and said that
tin April 1 there will be under con
struction '.he enormaus total of 71 ships,
namely, Jl battleships, 19 armored
cruisers, 2 second-claps, 4 third-class
cruisers, 4 scouts, 2 sloops, 18 torpedo
boats and 3 submarine boats. The na-

vy expondtur of the British empire
on sea-going force in 1901 -S was $15$.-
000.000, of which the United Kingdom
contributed $155,000,(. Other nations
spent as follows: United States, $57,.
000,000; Japan, J20.500.000; Russia, 150,
009,000: Japan, $20,500,000; Germany,
$37,500,000; France, $60,000,000. How
long this unproductive expenditure
will continue must be a burning ques
tion with Brtish taxpayers. The ex
penses of the navy and the army to
gether would lead one to question the
virtue of a nation requiring such a
prodigious outlay for protection.
Why ny set of knockers should
want to tie up the prospeets of the
Lewis and Clark exposition and. if pos
sible, prevent its being held, by a re
sort to the referendum, is not plainly
to be seen. Enough progress has be?n
made by those having the enterprise
in charge to prove their ability and the
ability of the northwest to successfully
carry out the plans for a fair which
will ba a credit and a vast benefit to
the section represented. The assist
ance already vouschafed by sister
states is indicative of the approbation
and a pledge of their hearty particl
pation. That there shoutd be Oregon-
tans who, at this stage of progress, de.
sire to Block proceedings. Is not credit
able to the state Indicative of good
Judgment In the Individuals.
Probably never before has there been
such rivalry In preparations for wel
coming a chief executive as is now
manifest among the western cities
fortunate enough to be on the list of
Roosevelt' Itinerary. His brief stay at
each point makes it incumbent upon
the committees, apparently, to attempt
to crowd the ceremonies and fetes of
a week into the limits of a day. If
the president does jiot bring along his
full reserve of dignified self-restraint,
he will be unable to escape from this
eosst with his usual triumphant ur
banty. One of the most valuable of early
Oregon documents la the diary kept
by Jaor Lee, superintendent of the
first missionary work in the Pacific
northwest. The journal, which dates
from April 20, 1834, has Just befn pre
sented to the Oregon Historical society
by Mrs. H. K. Hines, and is a most
notable accession to that important
collection.
