It la all very well to say that the i hand that rocks the cradle rules ilw world, but one of the most potent and tar resching influences exerted In the live of men and women Is that exer cised by the school teacher. Some parents attend carefully to the tmlning of their children, mentally, morally and physically, but the ma ' Jorlty of them do not, and a very large number do not give their offspring as much care and attention as they would to the training of a setter pup or the promulgation of the neighborhood gos sip. '. Their children come more under the Influence of their teachers than of any one else, and are more susceptible to that Influence, because the teacher Is regarded as superior person, having authority and wisdom Usually what the teacher says Is unquestioned, while familiarity with the too-fre quent Incompetence of parents often leads to a disrespect which sometimes reaches a degree f contempt. But, granting that the child has av erage home care, he Is still largely the creature of the schaol teacher, school atmosphere and his schoolmates, and the teacher is largely accountable for the Influence of the latter two. Ths average parent is quite content to hustle the children off to school and trusts the teacher with the all-import ant task of making men and women of them; of instructing them, not only in ths ordinary branches, but also in deportment, cleanliness, care of 'he body, morality, honor, and all other needful virtues. If the teacher is thorough In afi these and numerous other desirable features, has a noble ambition to make the n.ost of her pupils, and is not compelled to teach more of them than he or she can possibly do justice to, the child Is un doubtedly in very good hands. The world has received untold blessings through the efforts of loyal and con sclent ions teachers, when the world neither knew, appreciated, nor repaid tne service. .But usually teachers are obliged to bestow their enj.sivors npon from 40 to 60 children more than any ordinary young man 6r woman an do justice to la the school studies, vithout paying any attention to individual training. With that number of Ively boys and girls under her care, any dogen of ihem enough to tax the energies and the abilities of the average school teacher to the utmost, little attempt can be made to give the special training which any child destined for the battle of life deserves. That this enormous responsibility will continue to be left with the teacher is inevitable. It has always beon and probably always will be the burden of the teacher to perform these offices for many children -or let them remain neg lected. But to the neglect of parents ami the crowding of school rooms Is added the further fact that the profes sion of teaching, than which there is none more necessary, more Important and more responsible, Is underpaid. The most skillful, learned and thorou ghly trained instructors are not too pro ficient to have charge of the develop ment of the citizens of the future. jV1ALTKOII TT leYJiiritllT" Made in California where materials are produced. UNJOfUH The Inherent rights and the posslbllt ties for good or evil of your child call for tha wisest possible guidance In Its tender years. The fact that .imbltious young men and women are willing to give their time and services In this work for small salaries hardly Justlftts the authorities In malntalnng the low scale of remun- eraton usually in effect. It the im pnrtance of the position Is so man! festly great, why should not he sal arles be proportionate? Can the degree of excellence, which the position deserves be secured for wagvs In most cafes less than a -good r-;-.-7?r ravel vea, and in many Instances below the earnings of unskilled labor? This, doe not reflect upon the ability or worth of any teacher, for there are decrees of value In the services of teachers as well as in those of any other professlo.1. The fact that so many capable and successful Instructors leave the schools for avocation where their ablllttes are more suitably rewarded Is evidence that the salaries paid are not suffic iently attractive to retain their serv. Ices. Unl it be assumed that teach ers find some compensation for the knowledge of having benefited others, it Is difficult to see why their Indspen- able servces should not be more ade quately rewarded.
