Every citizen tk.s pride In the un- paralleled efficiency of the American public school system, and give a cer tain decree of credit to the various pri vate and the religious schools of the . land. If asked to tell why these Instl tutloita are so valued, the average In dividual will Invariably point to the apparent advantage an educated young man or woman has In life, mention the Important part In affairs which the ed ucated person plays, and explain that the ed.i;itional privileges of ttls won derful country are a boon to the chil dren of the nation, a joy and a pride. All of which Is truth. Credit the schoools with an Influence for good In the lives of the children who attend them, which is ao great, so potent, so far reaching, that Its val ue connot be estimated or comprehend ed. Grant that in after years, the men and women who I nchlldhood and youth had the benefit of our educational fa- ' cilities become the bone and sinew, the brains, the very life of our great nation. - And yet all Is not said. One of the most potent and salutary benefits of our various schools la the Indirect but very effective, Influence , upon the -.rider members of the families represented by the boys and girls who attend them. The children become the instructors of their parents. At school little John and Mary are taught many impressive lessons upon many subjects besides reading and arithmetic. Edu cators now know that children should somewhere learn the proper nse and care of the body, its structure, what conserves its well being, and what detrimental to it One might suppose that the parents would be first In sup plying this most essential knowledge, but usually they never attempt it- probably never acquired it themselves. Even cleanliness is seldom thoroughly taught in the homes. Parents will sometime appreciate their responsibilities more fully. By precept, example, text book, prac tical illustrations, and every other ap proved means, the ideas of the young are not only "taught to shoot" but are directed toward high ideals. Morality, , good citizenship, patriotism, unselfish ness, sobriety, Industry, truthfulness, bonor, personal neatness and good man ners are among the virtues which ev ery day school and Sunday school teachers seek to cultivate in the mind and heart of every pupil. And they meet with a very large de gree of success, too. ; What the child learns at school it repeats at home. The impressions of , the school room become the topics for conversation In the home. As the light of knowledge begins to shed its whole some and inspiring rays upon the bud ding Intellect of the son, the father gets interested in the wonderful state ments of the teacher and the text books, and his thoughts and speech are tempered by what the boy learns at school. The little daughter often in terrupts her mother's mending pos sibly In vain, by asking for assistance In solving the deep questions of a les son being studied at home, but the mother gets the benefit of all the child is learning. Thus the parents are influenced. The moral and good citizenship ideas In this, way disseminated are probably the most productive of results. Smit ten In conscience that their bad habits and evil associations are sadly in con tract with " the Innocent hearts and pur minds of their lovely childen, whose quickening perceptions and ris ing ambitions make them quick to dis cern and prone to Imitate, many fath ers have forsaken profane language, Intemperate habits, vicious practices and questionable business relations. Other parents, gradually acquiring a taste for learning and desire for wlf improvement an ambition for In-ereas-Jd usefulness and a possible fear of be!" Jwoked down upon by their progressive progeny, have taken ad vantage of every means of accomplish ing these ends for themselves, with the result that the Instruction emanating from the school ooro becomes rctent in promoting a higher grade of moral ity, Intellecutallty and kindred virtue in people a generation older than the pupils. Wry noticeable In cosmopolitan AS' torta. If we add to these facts the Influence of the churches, the persistent and In telligent efforts of righteous men and women for the betterment of their fel low 3, and the immense -'alue of good literature we probably have the secret of the deliverance of our city to a vevy marked degree, fortunately, from the un-teslrable features which were so prominent 15 or more years ago. Any observant person can notice ths grent change which has taken pUce. Crime, drunkeness, and general rowdyism were then far more common than now. Immorality and dissipation, whieh now are almost universally frowned upon, were then wlnW at. Public and pri vate eorruptlon were much more in ev idence and far less censured than at present If the schools have contributed as largely to these ends as we believe, then they have not only earned our highest esteem and gratitude, but are worthy of the Investment of a largely increased amount of money with which to Increase their efficiency. The best Is none too good In this case, and the best costs money. The Sabbath schools come In for no small amount of credit for the work accomplished. Many good results might be traced to the short or.ce-a-'week sessions of the Sabbath schools, which have made vriser, happier and better men and women, though the source of the blessing may not have been thought of. Many parents, too, who do not affiliate with the churches, recog nize their good offices and ate glad to have their children receive the ben- efts which churches and Sunday schools dispense, as is evidenced by the liberal support and encouragement given. Churches and schools, wor ality and education, sobriety tnd law- observance, good citizenship and gen eral enlightenment have multiplied to gether. Pessimists may dispute it. but the truth prevails that we are grow Ing better, all of us, or the average person. Can there be any better Investment made? - WOMEN'S SYMPATHT. My oack began to ache and as time rolled on it kept getting worse Instead of better. It finally grew so bad that I could scarcely stoop or straighten aftr stooping. When I did any work requiring bending I could hardly get up, and I had headaches, dizzy spells, and at times everything before me look ed blurred. I was Just about to start to the store for a plaster to put en my back when I read about Doan's Kidney Pills, and as they were bo highly recommended for kidney trouble I made up my mind to try them and procured a box at Charles Roars' drug store on Commercial street.
