The Above telegraphic message has .created a temporary tempest that give promise of becoming permanent. It appeared originally in the Portlaud Journal, together with an editorial ex pression from the Oregonian of Febru ary 21 in which Mr. Scott disclaimed any Intention of ever going info the sen atorial contest. Mr. Scott makes pub lication of his telegram to Senator Browncll theeuhject of a severe stric ture on the Integrity of the Clackamas senator, and promises to attend to his case at a later date. We see no ground for hard feelings ver this trifling matter. To begin with Senator Bcownell had a perfect right to call on Mr. Scott and offer his . support to the editor If the latter real ly desired to become a senatorial can dldate, It does not matter that Mr, ' Brownell had already Identified himself with the Fulton movement. He was at liberty to "switch" at any time. His motive nuy have been questioned by Mr. Scott and others, but the instance is not an unusual one, nor one that should serve to engender personal strife, such as the Oregonian threat' ens. On the other hand, Mr. Scott is not to be too severely censured for bis course. He had all along maintained that he did not aspire to the senatorshlp, and even on the morning of the election, In an editorial discussion of the result of the contest, reiterated that he had nev er asked nor desired the support of any member of the legislature. "Now is the time" indicates that Mr. Scott really did entertain senatorial aspirations, and that his protests of innocence were mads with some disregard for fact. In deed, it would appear that he had been lightly untruthful. But let it be supposed that Senator Brownell was veally a traitor and thai Editor .Scott was really untruthful what of It? .Did not Senator Brownell have the right to desert Senator Fulton S lie wished to do so, and did not Editor Scott have the right to hide from the public the senatorial longing that evidently possessed him? We should say emphatically that both gen ilemen were blameless. - la view of this, we fail to discerj th logic of Mr. Scott's threat to make life unpleasant for Senator Brownell. If the senator saw fit to furnish proof of the Inaccuracy of the editor's statement that he did not wish to represent Ore gon In the United States senate he might to be regarded more in the light cf a public benefactor for tearing away the mask from Mr. Scott than as an A MSLD CASE Of Contagious Blood Poison never exis ted. It is always bad, tsouga sometimes no external symptoms of the disease ap pear Jar a long time. Because the disease is slow in (level oping does not indicate that the case is a muu one, xor me puusunuus virus i work in the blood and system may be spending its force upon some internal vital organ while you are looking for ex ternal signs. Contagious Blood Poison does not affect all alike. In most cases the first little sore is quickly followed by painful swellings in the groins, a red eruption upon the body, sores or ulcers in the mouth and throat, unsightly copper colored blotches, loss of hair and eye brows and other symptoms of this miser able disease. When the poison is thus fighting its way to the surface, exposing the disease in all its hideousness, we call it a bad case: but Contazious Blood Poi- son, whether working internally or exter nally, is a dangerous, treacoerous aisease. S. S. S. is the only remedy that cures Contagious Blood Poison thoroughly and permanently. The Swift Speoifio Co., Atlanta, Ga. Kt intending traitor to Senator Fulton Of the two. Editor Scott la more to be blamed, but even at that he Is not to be too roundly scored. His senatorial campaign was matter of especlaV Inter est to himself, and if he deemed secrecy essential to success he would have been very foolish Indeed to take the general public Into his confidence. The whole affair ts trivial, and we trust that the editor will not attach too much Importance to It. The man who commits some act of egregious folly and then curses the newspapers because they publish the story, is not entitled to much sympathy says the Portland Journal. So long as he keeps within the limits prescribed bv sood morals, good sense and (he laws of the state he has the right to ex pect that he will not be hold up to pub lic contempt. When he oversteps these bounds he must take the consequence. The common law breaker is punished through the machinery of the courts. The violator of the unwritten laws cf society usually escapes without V punishment other than that Involved in giving publicity to his act. It is for tunate for society that this means of retribution exists. The fool txsents the publication of his folly and smarts under the knowledge that he has be come the theme of gossip and criticism. The penalty Is a drastic one, for Inno cent persons may be Involved in his suf ferlng. But he has only himself to blame. The family and relatives of the criminal condemned to a term in state's prison are subjected to the keen est humiliation and shame, yet these are but Inevitable consequences of the recompense which outraged law exacts. The fear of public criticism Is ne of the safeguards of society. It serves to keep in Check many a man'who would overstep the bounds ot decency it he be lieved that he could do so without fx-posure."- Neither the courts nor the newspapers are Infallible, but both, when honestly conducted, are (onserv- atora of good morals.
