' 80c Served by currier, per month..., .. 60c OUI.F BETWEEN PARKER AND HEARST. ' Two men who are now being discus sed In connection with the next demo- cratlc nomination for the presidency are Chit Judge Alton B. Parker of the New York court of appeals, and Con- pressman-elect William R. Hearst of: New York, the owner of the New Tork Journal and : American, the Chicago American and the San Francisco Exam Iner. New York state will probably aend a delegation to the next democrat ic national convention Instructed to vote a a unit for a candidate from that state, even, and as between these two men, the chances are overwhelmingly In favor of Judge Parker as the choice of the democrats of that state. In deed, the candidacy of Mr. Hearst will not be regarded seriously by the dem ocratic politicians of the Empire state, even if regarded so elsewhere, says the Tacoma News, There is no compari son between the two men and an apol ogy might seem to be due to Judge Parker for oupling the two names in this connection. Judge Parker s name is being more than favorably received by democrats all over the country who desire to place a strong man in nomination against President Roosevelt next year, and at the same time Mr. Hearst is being In formally nominated, for president by others who afreet sincerity and avow an admiration for the young man. The calf for Mr. Hearst Is too farcial to be seriously discussed. 'It Is only nece' sary to recall the utterances In regard to Mr. Hearst and his newspapers which were evoked at the time of the assassination of the late President Mc kinley to form a correct idea of the estimate which thoughtful Americans of all shades of political opinion have regarding the chief promoter of yellow Journalism in this country. The dem ocratic Darty In the United States could not commit a more suicidal act than to place Mr. Hearst upon a presi dential ticket. . Mr. Hearst Is a demo cratic congressman-elect and has been a conspicuous democrat for many years by reason both of his ownership of three large newspapers and his per - sonal participation in the national denv ocratic clubs' work. But even the party which twice committed the mistake of nominating Mr. Bryan on a free silver platform can not be presumed to have ifallen Into such a state of idiocy as to . tender the next nomination to William K. Hearst. ' The most significant fact regarding Judge Parker's candidacy for the nomi nation. If such it may be called at this stage, is that many of .Mr. Bryan's most loyal supporters in New York fa vor him. The democracy of that state supported him for chief judgeship of the court of appeals In 1897 and elected him notwithstanding a split over Mr. Bryan's nomination the previous year which gave the McKinley 'electors the state by 268,000 plurality. Fifteen years ago or more, before he went on the su preme court bench In that state, Judge Parker was an active democratic poli tician and chairman of the executive committee of the democratic state com mittee. In those days the democrats .Ai wjnnlnir vlftnrlfid In V1 w York: that '"fact is not forgotten now. In I fact Judge Parker seems to possess the I qualities calculated to arouse more gen eral enthusiasm among democrats of various shades of opinion than any oth er man who haa been mentioned in con nectlon with the next nomination. It, Is not impossible that the still prevailing prejudice in many quarters against automobiling unreasoning and violent. In far too many Instances- may, so operate as to materially retard the progress and development of what ought to be ultimately a great Industry In the United States.says the New Tork Commercial. Baron Rothschild attrib utes" the rather remarkable growth of automobile manufacture In France to the marked encouragement given to automobile racing In that country. At a recent dinner given in hia honor by the Automobile club of Great Britain he dwelt at length on this point, showing that while the authorities In France regulate the running of automobiles with more or less strictness they throw1 no obstacle In the way of legitimate racing; they extend to It every reason able encouragement within their power. Their aim la, In general, to develop the Industry through promoting the sport and popularising the use of the machin es, both at home and abroad. The re sults would seem to justify Baron Rothschild's contention: In 1900 the value of automobiles exported from France was only $1,450,000; during ISM it had increased to $2.SS.S00; and last year It rose to $5,S10,200 practically an advance of M0 percent. Seventy con cerns In France are engaged in the manufacture of automobiles and they give employment to fully 45.000 hands If the workers engaged in making tiros and otlvr "auto" accessories are count ed, the total iumber of employes in the French industry approximates ISO.iW The tire industry alone is of great pro portions. One French firm put out 3. 000,000 worth last year; and tires aggie gating in value several hundred thous and dollars passed through the hands of other smaller concerns. We may easily go too far here in the United States in discouraging "auto" racing. The wiser policy would be to regulate it within reasonable limits and "reus onable" in this connection, might well be stretched a bit from the present understanding of the word In certain quarters. The horse is getting aequa lnted with his new rival a good deal faster than some persons are. NOTICE TO FISHERMEN.
