4. ASTORIA. OREGON, SATURDAY, JANUARY 3, 1903. Morning' Astorian Establlshd 1171 RATBSt Bent by mail, per year W 00 Bent by mail, per month 60c Berred by carrier, per month 60c DEFENDERS OF MONROEISM. The Monroe doctrine's roll of & fenders grows larjr and larger. Can ada joined the list a short time ago, land now Australia comes over to us Of course, Canada's reasons for favor Ing the Monroe principle can easily be guessed. In the event of a war be tureen England and a coalition of the big powers of Europe, In which Eng. land's defeat would be probable, Cana da woull be open to assault. That col eny la a very valuable part of the Brit ish empire,' and an enemy of England would strike It just as son as oppor tunity offered. Under the Monroe doc trine, however, the United States would be obliged to resist the conquest of that locality by any other European power or powers,. , Australia has discovered an import- Ant reason why she should defend the Monro principle. The establishment of the colonies of any great European nation In Central or South America would, so Australians say, be a men ace to their independince and safety Consequently, they have as strong an Incentive as the Canadians for being champions of the Monroe idea. The Influence of Canada and Australia, it is said, has been exerted in London in the past week to induce England to scrup ulously refrain from doing anything which would arouse any distrust in the United States. These colonies are es pectally anxious that England nhonld cut loose from the German alliance at the earliest possible moment. . Monroeism's virtues appeal to the enlightened public sentiment of the world because it is a great bulwark of peace. " It has saved the 'American continent from partitioning and spolia tion which has gone on In Africa and which threatens China. . Obviously, in the American case the partitioning, If it had been permitted, would have led to ceasless wars, for the inhabitants of South America, notwithstanding their follies and Ignorance, are far removed above the inhabitants of the African continent Their enslavement would be a crime against civilization, which would be sure", to provoke rebellions Among the people directly concerned, and would lnlv the United States. The Monroe barrier shuts out all spoli ation, gives the people of the contin ent the opportunity to work out their own destiny in their own time and in their own way, and preserves the peace of "the hemisphere and of the islands adjacent thereto. This principle will always have stalwart defenders from th4 United States, England and Eng land's colonies In this part of the world to pay nothing of the countries of Latin-America themselves. The United States Steel corporation, tha, largest concern in the country, with its capitalization of $1,100' ,000,000, has set a worthy example for other trusts In providing that its employes shall have an opportunity of buying stock and becoming partners in the concern. Such departures as this cre ate the hope that the socialistic tend ency of the times will be stamped out. Every man has the right to acquire something for himself in this world, and If the opportunity to do so is not presented It should be created. Every one of the 50,000 men employed by the steel trust will now feel that his work can be made to count that he will be enabled to net something more than a more living with his labor. The great trust's etioo' Is strikingly fair, and it is to he hoped that the idea will spread generally among the coprorations that noijr practically control the affairs of tha country. v. ; , , , . , The suggestion of,.ft- local jihj'sitlan that a Btate board of health be created is iimely. Ourealth; is of more Im portance than, anything else, and if we art too careless to properly look after it.hve should be compelled to do so. Epidemics of scarlet fever and dlph therla, with a sprinkling of smallpox, art not conducive to the best interests of any community; Astoria has been granted common point rates on lumber and settlers. The first thing we know, we will have those much desired grain rates, and then well. In the meantime , we must go ahead vi 1th th development of lumber Ing. ' -c The Tacoma Ledger blames the Co lumbla river bar-ifor the delay to the British ship Madagascar, which has been detained here for 5( days. Well, maybe the bar is to blame for the ab- normal strength of the Madagascar's Irish crew, that pulled the capstan to pieces several times and occasioned the detention, but we had all along at tributed the strenuoslty to potatoes. The Orvgontan is ch.irry about admit ting that Astoria is the second city In the state. Astoria wouldn't be so backward about an admission of the kind concerning Portland. Hut, then, some people are very selfish . The West Coast Trade's annual num ber has been received. It Is one of the finest special trade editions ever issued In the northwest and contains much In formation of value. The operations of the two thugs who held up a young man on Commercial street a few nights ago give promise of solving the question as to what to do with ladies' watches. Our impression Is that the senatorial bee which Is buxzing in the hat of Binge r Hermann will fail to find the coveted hive at the national capital. If Binger Hermann swallows Gov ernor Geer, as a valley paper suggests, he will probably have a dark brown taste in his mouth for quite a while. Th extent of the following of that Morroccan pretender would tend to create the impression that he is the real thing. Two million dollars and Intelligent, concerted action will make the Lewis and Clark fair a suess. Who's going to vote for Binger? Now, don't all speak at once!
