Curtis J. Trenchard la a native As

Judge Trenchard has always bceu a

against the lamented J. H. D. Gray.
With the single exception of one vie
lory, Judge Trencbard's campaigns
have always been dose ones, and only
once did he receive more than 104 ma
jority. In the eignt year that he was

he Joined, the volunteer Are department
of this city, which in those days was
wont to establish world's records. For
several years he was foreman of com
pany No. 1, afterwards first assistant
thief, and still later chief. In 187S he
was president of the board of delegates,
and old-timers wiilrecall that he had
tharge of a three days' fair to raise
money to build the bell tower that now
adjoins the city hail. The fair netted
90, with which the tower was envted
and the bell purchased.
In 1834 Judge Trenchard entered the
political arena, the democrats nomi
nating him for county clerk against
Colonel Spedden. There was never a
more exciting fight for office, and the
official count showed that Colonel
Sledden had been successful by one
vote. ' In Mr. Trenchard was

Jude Trenchard's father was a
physician who came to California In
1M7 and to Oregon In 1849. Doctor
Trenchard was a member of the Ore
gon legislature when Senators Baker
and Nesmith were elected In 185. He
died in 1857 of Inflammatory rheuma
tism. Mrs. Trenchard is still living in
Astoria, at the age of 78. She was born
March IS. 1824, In Maryland.
Judge Trenchard Is progressive and
intends continuing the work of the
county court in the building of roads
and other . improvements. He is a
warm advocate of the proposal for a
new courthouse and hopes during his
term to provide for its construction.
His associates In the conduct of the af
fairs of the county are Commissioners
Andrew Young and C. C. Clarke.

Approaching Session of the Oregon Legislature.
At the coining session of the legisla
ture Itepresentative-elect C W.
Carnahan will present a measure to
make extensive changes In the road
lawt of the stale. Mr. Camahan has
given the subject of roads much con
sideration, and believes his blil will
merit the approval and support of
members' of the legislature generally.
He Is of the opinion that the road laws
should be about the'same in character
as the schwl laws with reference to the
levying of taxes that the money de
rived from taxes in each district should
be expended in that district. The bill
will provide for a general state levy of
5 mills, which shall apply to all locali
ties, and -iach district will be authoriz
ed to make such additional levies as
thi! requiroments of the highways may
demand. This will take out of the
hands of county courts the fixing of
levies, and the bill has many features
which will commend themselves to
good roa ls enthusiasts. During the
recent good roads convention held in
ferent counties of Oregon. His bill
will embody ttie best Ideas obtainable.
Portland Mr, Camahan met the gov
ernment commissioners and thoroughly
discussed the matter with them, as well
as with representatives from the dif
ferent counties .of Oregon. His bill
