TWO FLOURISHING HOUSES
The Astoria Iron work was Incor
porated In April, 181, by John Fox, the
late Captain J. O. Hustler and Captain
A. D. Was, with 14000 capital Mock,
and In May, 1881, Mr, Fox commenced
business for the company in what he
proudly termed a "machine shop." The
hop was located at the north went cor

building now occupied by Chinese. In
the concern, and to him much of the

the expectations of her owner, for whom she Is doing fine work.

building have been made, and today

000, and the value of the yearly pro
duct ha reached 1300,000 to $350,000.
The Astoria Iron works has built up
Its repu'ation by turning out cannery
machinery. Its product is widely
sought, order coming from British Co
lumbia, Alaska, Puget sound, the Pa
clflc count salmon streams, a'nd even
from China and Japan. The' company
1 making the very best can machine
in existence, and exclusively manufac
ture several other much-sought appli
ances, notable among them the Troyer
gasoline engine, the Invention of a resi
dent of this city. The shop I particu
larly well equipped for the construc
tion of small passenger and towing
steamers, and the boats built there for
us all over the coast have proved a
valuable advertisement for the com
pany.. The Iron works Is one of the
most important Industries of Astoria,
and Is constantly growing. It Is the
creation of the president of the firm,
springing from the miniature "ma
chine shop" that was started by him

Mr. Leathers has turned out several
stenmer and launches for Alaska, and
It Is to his credit that Puget sound con
