J THE ASTORIAN PUBLISHING: CO, The defeated candidate tor city office should not feel downcast, but should bear In mind that everyone could not be elected. In political de feat there Is no -disgrace, nor does the success of a candidate necessarily In " dk-ate that he Is more popular than his opponent, or more worthy. Politics Is au uncertain and mysterious same. At times men of recognised ability and widespread popularity go down before men of ordinary ability and lit tle popularity. The popular man in times of peace (poiitk-ally speaking) will not always run well, as has been: demonstrated scores of times In this: city and Ute. ' This is due to the! fact that our elections are controlled largely by that class which has no real Interest in the contestants those hun dreds who take part In elections at the instance of political workers, and who usually vote for a consideration. This Indifferent element controls all our elections, except those In the small country towns, and Its support, does not always correctly portray the re spective standing of the candidates When we stop to consider the rMlcn lousness of permitting men to take part In elections who cannot unaided mark their ballots, we are Impressed with the necessity of a change In our system of government. Under ordl nary circumstances, politics is just as much a gme of chance as faro, and when a candidate is defeated he can, In most cases, attribute his failure to 111 luck. Yesterday both parties had capable representatives on their tick ets, for which the people of the city should be thankful. The conduct of municipal affairs is a thankless task, and, now that the election is over, we should all help the members of the council and the city attorney in the performance of their duties. The English oapers are telling story of Sir Hiram Maxim whih is to the credit of the autosccpe and Lary Maxim's ingenuity. Sir Hiram and Lady Maxim were staying at a south em watering olace. Portland Journal: A proposition' to change the date of Oregon's state elec tion from the first Monday in June to the first Tuesday atitr the first Mon day In November will be presented to the legislature to be submitted as an amendment to the lonstilutlon. There are numerous reasons why the amend ment should be adopted. There are none- why It should not be. Oiegon, In a year when the presidential elec tion occurs, ' passes through two per iods of trial. Elections disturb busi ness relation's, interfere with social amenities and mix up things gener ally for weeks In each instance. Be sides the actual cost of conducting elections and the preceding campaigns, all elections entail expense in these disturbances that come to the body political and social. Elections are necessary, but they are not so desir able as to make it piofilable to have two during any one year. Were the state and congressional elections to be held upon the same date as that of the national, the entire tissue of Issues for the year would be sittled at one time and there would b? eliminated much of the needless bother, and expense that now iccur. In the event the proposition comes to the legislature. It should be submitted to the people for their sanction, and then the people should endorse it at the election of 1902. Proper agitation of the sub-j ject would secure sul'Ii a result. Salem Journal: Congressman Thom as H. Tongue has introduced a bill in congress creating a pure food bureau for the agricultural department. If pure food 'aws are not enforced by those who are sworn to perform this duty, It is useless to waste time, talk and money In th lr passage.' Oregon has a pure food law, and yet drank tuberculosis milk until the public arose in its majesty, condemned the cows and exposed the officials. Hillsboro Independent: What busi ness has the democratic organ of Port land to complain of Matthews, the United States marshal of Oregon, be cause he at one time was prominent in the councils of the republican par ty? When Mr, Matthews falls to prop erly perform the duties of his office, the Journal may properly report the fact and become the plainllif in an ac tion to have Urn removed. Aurora Borealis: As January ap proaches, Johnathan Bourne shows some of his hand, and It Is filled with lucre. Bourne's idea has been to keep Geer and Fulton before the pub lic as the two prominent senatorial candidates. When these two get In to a deadlock he will Jump into the ring, the only candidate with money to burn. . Post-IntjlligMcer: The newspa pers of Portland are calling upon the police for extra activity In the way of protection against an alleged influx of thugs and toughs "from Seattle." This report may b true, but we have not noticed any large number of va cancies here. TO CURE A COLETin'oNB DAT Take Laxative Eromo Quinine Tablets.
