The Portland Journal, usually ration ales now off in th realm of pipe dreams anent the senatorial situation and the atti'ude of the Fulton forces. Some day ago The Astorlan suggested that, Governor Geer having been favored politically by Mr. Fulton in the past, he might now show some appreciation and Join with the majority in electing him to the senate. The Journal has figured out that is a concession thtit the fight for the senate lies be tween those two men. No more un reasonable .inclusion could possibly be arrived at. The Astorlan has re pentedly insisted, before and since pub- lication of the paragraph which seems so suggestive to the Journal, that Mr. Geer could not hope for election, or even for complimentary support. So far as The Astorlan is concerned, it re- . gards his candidacy as nonsensical. It Is unfair and the Journal knows it to attribute the paragraph in question to a change of front on the part of Senator Fultoa and his friends. They know quite well that Mr. Fulton will be elected to the United States sen ate, for his present strength is suffic ient to insure the success of his can didacy. Governor Geer and his friends and the Journal is one of them, for a purpose that can never be realized are quite ready to elaborate upon any trifling reference to the Marion coun ty man's aspirations, and to make it appear that he is a formidable candi date. If Governor Geer stood any chance of election to the senate, there would be ample reason for his candi dacy; but everyone knows that his claim to the senate Is purely spectacu lar. Mr. Fulton's friends are not fight ing anyone in this campaign, but have confined themselves to legitimate effort In behalf of the man of their choice. Of course. It -would Immensely please the esteemed Journal to create a fight between the logical candidate for the senate and some of those who have "butted into" the arena, but its hope will not be realized. It might be ad ded for the Journal's benefit that Gov ernor Geer is perhaps as strong a can didate as any other man who may pos sibly undertake to wrest the toga from the man who should and will wear it. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer thinks the terriblii explosion upon the bay, w hich caused the loss of a dozen iivm ami flsmaeed orooerty to the When a inan is drowning his rescue fs t question of timely help. It is the same thing in disease. Many a time the doctor says of a man whose condition is . hopeless, "If you'd begun in time you might have been cured." This is especially true when the dis ease affects the lungs. Delay is danger ous. The timelv use of Dr. Pierce's Govden Sled'cal Discovery will result in a quick cire of deep-seated coughs, bronchitis, and weak lungs. Y. ijtm, i..snun:M.fjj.s J "I'm JIM' '1 amount of t-WOO, will probably cause an immediate revision of the theory that crude oil is destined to take the place of coal as fuel for deep-water steamships. The Progreaso was be ing converted from a coal burner to an oil burner and the .work was practically completed. She had on board 14 oil tanks, containing about 400 barrels of oil in all, a relatively small amount as compared with the amount of fuel nec essary to be carried on a long voyage. Suddenly, without any warning, one of these tanks of fuel blew up, followed at brief intervals by the explosion of the other tanks as the blazing iluld reached them. The vessel was wreck ed and practically destroyed, the w harf at which she lay was burned, eleven men were killed and a score of others injured. The theory of the explosion is that gas generated in one of '.he oil tanks. The use of oil as a fue' for steamships Is still in the experinu aUU stage. " Such of the experi men's ns have been made were partially su- cess ful. There has been some complaint that boilers deteriorate much more rapidly where fuel oil is used than where coal Is the fuel; but as an offset, the saving in labor in stoking has been put forward. The relative cheapness of oil as compared with cool has not been determined; local conditions, of course, being prime factors'. In places where oil is produced and coal has to be imported, the odds would prob.ibiy be In favor of oil, and the converse of the proposition would likewise be true. But if there are such deadly possibil ities Involved in the use of oil as fuel for steamships as demonstrated In the case of the Progresso, It Is safe to say that an Immediate check will be put to the conversion of coal burners into oil burners on steamships. If the govern ment inspectors do not change their views and refuse to grant licenses to oil-burning vessels, It Is quite certain that the marine insurance companies will refuse insurance to such vessels, unless it can be demonstrated that there was some peculiar feature of the i-rogresso disaster which can be guarded against in the future. If oil is too dangerous to use as fuel for steamships, the relative cheapness of coal will continue to be an important consideration in determining the com mercial supremacy of seaports.
