Returns Prom Penitentiary and Mur
ders His Wife.
CHICAGO. lc 4. The jury In the
case of William J. Nelson, on trial in
Judge McEwen's court for the murder
of his w ife, returned a verdict of guilty
last night and fixed the defendant s
punishment at imprisonment for life.
Nelson returned to Chicago last sum
mer after finishing a term in the Joliet
penitentiary. Finding that his wife
had transferred her affections to an
other and failing to induce her to re
turn to him. he shot and killed her.

MEXICO CITY, Dec. 4.-George D.
Cook, a banker of Chicago and New
York, who is here, has had several au
diences with high officials of the gov
ernment It is rumored that he has
stated to the ogvernment the opinion
of New York bankers on the advisa
bility of putting Mexico on a gold
basis. It is stated that he promised
the aid of the American bankers In
h.ininir the government adopt a gold
standard. There Is much interest in
the object of his visit.

The meet will be held in this city on
May 9 next. The track meet between

R.Kt had a conference today with
Quartermaster-General Ludington and
Colonel Patton, incharge of the army
transport service, with regard to bids
recently received for the transporta
tion of troops snd military supplies be
tween the Pacific coast and the Phil
ippines. The lowest bid received was that of
a Boston company unnlng steamships
between Seattle and Manila. It was
at rates much below the regular com
mission rates. The main question to be
determined is whether the rates of
fered by tha Boston company will pus
tify the government lit the abandon
ment of the army transport service
across the Pacific.

NEW YORK, Dei-. 4. At a meeting
of the African Trade section of the
Liverpool -chamber of comm rce. says
a London dispatch to the Times, Sir
Alfred L. Jones, president of the
chamber, read a letter from Asa Thom
son of Galnesville,Ga., in reference
to the West A trie in Cotton Growers'
eippriments.
.Mr. Thompson stated that a large
numler of colored cotton growers of
the southern states would be glad, un
der favorable .ondltions, to engage In
farming In West Africa. He suggest
ed that free transportation by British
steamships and railroads be provided
for them.

ST. PETERSBURG, Dec. 4.-Freight
traffic is at a complete standstill on
a portion of '.he Kusk-KharkolT rail
road In con.ieiri mce of the water sup
ply giving out. At I -os Ovaya alone
2400 loaded trucks are tied up. A fall
of snow is anxlousy awaited In order
that snow water may be available for
the locomotives. The only means of
overcoming the difficulty seems to be
to pipe water from the Samar river at
a cost of $250,000.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 4. -From
the Guatemalan coast the Pacific mail
steamer City of Sydney brings the news
that the deaths resulting from the re
cent eruption of Santa Maria jIvuiw
amounted to about 3000. This estimate
la based upon the latest Information
that, had been received at San Jose de
Guatemala previous to the Sydney's de
parture from this port, but it Is accom
panied by the statement of Guatemal
eans that reliable information was still
difficult to obtain. This death list is
considerably smaller than that pre
viously reported.
