DISEASED MKATS.
The Portland Journal has unearth
ed a fearful condition pf affairs in the
metropolis. It seems that the people
of that city have been eating diseased
meats for months past, and that abso
lutely no effort has been made to stop
the. sole of this death-dealing product.
The case at issue at present is. that
of a Fairview dairyman, who has been
shipping into Portland cheese nianu
" factured from the milk of cows af
fected with tuberculosis.
Dr. Btersdorf, city health commis
sioner, states that he has within the
past year personally condemned the
carcasses of two cows which died of
tuberculosis and which were offered for
sale as beeff 40 hogs that were affected
with swine cholera, and two sheep that
ucciinbed to pneumonia. Cancer also
attacks these tmimals, and it Is evi
dent that hundreds of diseased beeves
have been sold in Portland alone.
Prior to the death of the tuberculosis
affected cattle their milk was sold by
unscrupulous dairymen.
It Is almost impossible to picture the
depravity of a dealer who would be
so cold-blooded as to sell cancerous
pork, for Instance, to the public, but
Dr. Btersdorf points out that they
even go so far as to remove all evi
dence of disease in cattle and hogs by
cutting away the throat, where can
cer breaks out in swine, and the lungs
of consumptive cattle. Whether or not
bovine tuberculosis Is transmissible to
human beings, it is a burning crime
that diseased meat should be sold to
the public. The men engaged In the
sale of stuff of this kind .ire the very
worst sort of criminals and hanging
would be much too good for them. Im
agine for yourself the feeling that
would come over one if he were in
formed that the pork roast eaten at
dinner the previous evening had come
from a canrerous animal, or that his
midday beefsteak was cut from a cow
that died of consumption. Certainly
the examination of every pound of
meat that ii offered for -sale is a dire
necessity, and the Journal Is doing
commendable work in exposing a con
dition of affairs th'it is intolerable.
Dr. BiersJorf suggisls a remedy that
ought to effectually stamp out this,
practice of villainy. He recommends
the establishment of -a central niai ket-
Enow that in spite of hard work in the
clear forest air the blood often becomes
impure. The heavy food served in the
lumber camps is to a great extent re
sponsible for this condition of the
blood, which renders the body an easy
prey to many forms of disease.

All of the seats for Me'.ba's llrst
series of concerts in Australia were
booked at unprecedented prices be
fore she reached Australia, hundreds
having stayed up all night in the
strvt in oriir to secure a good place
on the opening of the box plan. She
has now tak.ni avny the breath of
the Australian public In quite an un
expected way, for she has formally an
nounced that she will devote the entire
proceeds of her triumphal tour to the
charities of her native) country. Fur
ther, she has decided to present a n-'iv
wing to the Melbourne hospital, whi; h
this she will give a ;r.md special con-
cert She has herself started the book- !
Ing by taking three boxes at t.Weaoh.l
the first being for her father, who was
so dramatically stricken down with
illness in the hour of his distinguished
daughter's remarkable welcome home.
The booking for her first five concerts
In Melbourne exceeded 10,00 and
that in a country where high prices
for ticekts are unknown so the value
Of her munificent offer can best t
guaged from this. The principal hos
pital of Melbourne has for years been
sorely cramped for accommodation,
and the new building will bea veri
table boon to the sick poor of the city.
According to the Post-Intelligencer
an analysis of the vote of New York
city in tht? recent election shows that
the democratic majority of about 115,
000 was due to republican indifference:
that the democratic vote was only 8000
In excess of that of two years ago,
and that 70,000 republicans stayed at
home. However, the vote of two years
ago cannot be taken ns a basis of
democratic strength in the American
metropolis. Then thousands of demo
crats voted against Tammany, while
in the last election all the interests
worked in harmony. New York city is
heavily democratic, and the republicans
must continue to look to the upp?r
section of the state for the votes to
offset the majority that is usually poll
ed by Tammany below the Bronx.
