THE ASTORIAN PUBLISHING CO. The proposal tor the convening of the Oregon Jefst ore In' extra' stsslon m without merit. Those who are clamoring for the session are out with . the statement that the senatorial light will have Its effect on the Lewis and Clark fair appropriation, urd that the Interests of the centennial -111 be come entangled politically. What does this mean? Can It be taken to Imply that the Multnomah delegation pur vosei following a political course so obnoxious to the balance of the state that the fair appropriation will not go - through? Multnomah county may just as well understand now as at some fu ture date that her delegation must act fairly with the outside delegations The people of Oregon, irrespective of political faith, are practically a unit In favoring a handsome appropriation for the centennial. The Oregonian has obtained expressions from mem' tiers of the legislature and they have almost unanimously declared for the 1500,000 asked by the fair board. What mors assurance does Portland want? The suggestion that the fair appropria. tlon and politics will not go well to gether carries with it a distasteful inv pression. If politics will prove harm ful in the matter of the fair appropri ation, It will likewise be hurtful In its effect on other matters or state Inter est. Then why not advocate the hold ing of a special session for the elec tion of a United States senator? This would be much more reasonable and less expensive, for a special session could be convened the day following adjournment of the regular session. Surely, If the political feature of the approaching session I", going to prove detrimental to the Interests of the state, two sessions will be necessary one for the transaction of business and the other for the election of Senator Simon's successor. The affairs of the state at large are equally as important as those of Multnomah county, and no special ruling ought to be made for any particular section. So far as The Astorinn Is concerned, It will op pose the extra session, believing that the 130,000 which It will cost could be better used as an additional sum to the fixed appropriation for the Lewis and Clark fair. If the sena torial election must be kept apart from ether matters, then let the extra ses sion be held to settle that question, SUPERSTITION Has been responsible for much of human mortality, lien and women die by thou sands in an Indian famine, not ( M because of lack of food but be U IT cause caste superstition prevents "l them from accepting it. Even V in America there are still to be found those who believe that healing herbs lack virtue unless gathered during eertain phases of the moon. The great foe of superstition is science. Every year science increases the terri tory ot use natural at me expense of the super natural. Doctor Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery achieves its successful cures because it is a icientific preparation orig inated by a scientific man. It cures diseases of the stomach anl other organs of digestion and nutrition, purifies the blood and establishes the body in sound health. A3 the writer of the following letter says, " It i tuc Itest thing for nervous ness and for .". weak nm-down condition that anybody would want. It gives a pers-in new life and new blood." "Golden Medical Discovery " contains no alcohol ami is free from opium, co caine and other narcotics. I muat again Mod a few lines to yoa to let yon know how I am getting along aincc taking tot wonderful medicine which cured me two jTi.n. ago," writes Miw Bertha Kbeler, of 1416 Benton Street, St. Louii, Mo. "I .till continue In very good health and think .thrre it not a better mtdlcta oa earth than Dr. Pierce'a Golden Medical DUcovery. It if tba beat thing for nervouaneaa and for s weak, run-down condition, that anybody would want. Some Interesting facts are brought out In the statistics recently made public showing the number of labor disputes In the United Kingdom during 190X. There were fewer strikes during that year, and the strikes and lock outs that did happen, says the Hritlsh Boarl of Trade, In Its annual report, were not remarkable by reason of the magnitude. Notwithstanding this en couraging statement, with which the report opens, It appears that there was a total of 42 strikes to be dealt with during the year involving 180.000 employes or about ! per cent of the In dustrial population. The time lost amounted to 4,000,000 working days or about 22 days per head of those affect ed. The ! ss of wages Incurred by the laborers is estimated at $5,000,000, Ths causes of the disputes that result ed In sflch an enormous loss in wages were numerous. The question of re muneration was the most common Cause of dispute, though not to such a marked extent as In previous years Of the 642 strikes 168 wer? for advances !ft wages, ai.d 101 were to resist a re duction In wages. Differences over hours of labor caused a number of the strikes, and a number of others arose ou; of the refusal of employes to work with non-union men. The strikes, y tha whole, ended more lu favor of me employers than of the employes. The most encouraging statistics in the re port are thoae which relate to the number of disputes that were settled by arbitration. The various perma nent boards of conciliation settled no less than 6S5 cases during the year without involving any cessation of work. This makes 43 more disputes settled by arbitration than by strikes. Those coal operators who are locking their doors against union men are pur suing a policy that will probably result In another great strike, and are giving evidence of bad faith. Representatives of the workmen agreed to the arbitra tion plan and were backed up by the men by unanimous vote. Representa tives of the operators likewise agreed to submit the differences to arbitration but now some of the operators are go ing back on their word. This shows a littleness that is beneath the dignity of capital and brands the offending oper ators as untruthful perverts. The miners, meanwhile, will not Injure their own Interests by calmly meeting every new situation that arises and refrain ing from any act of violence. An Indiana doctor has discovered a means of bringing drowned and suffo cated persons back to life, and New York physicians have Just sewed up a woman's heart. If we can manage to hold on for ?5 or 30 yfars more, per haps it will not be necessary to die at all. San Francisco has contributed al most $10,000 to the widow and children of Henry T. Heffernan, a fireman who wa; killed while performing his duty. The coast metropolis Is a very "fast" town, but in some respects it is truly Christian. The apple crop of the county is 43, 000,000 barrjls. Contemplation of the number of pies that this vast quantity of apples would make ought to have a buoyant effect on the spirits of Young America. The deadly little cigarette makes fools of 90 i-r rent of the boys who use them, li.trs of 40 per cent and corp.vs of a percentage that Is not given. The cigarette Is a good thing to let alone. King Oscar has decided against the I'nited States In the Samoan matter. We can console ourcelves with the thought that one can't always win. SAVED AT GRAVE'S BRINK.
