Blows Out His Brains at St. Paul Be

Betrothed Wife.
, ST. PAUL, Oct. 0. James Younger
formerly a member of the notorious
James band of outlaws, which infest
ed the Western country a quarter of
a century ago, committed suicide yes
terday by shooting. He left a letter
to the press, In which he gives as a
reason for his despondency over
continued ill-health and separation
from his friends. The suicide is sup
posed to have occurred about 8 o'clock
yesterday morning. Younger occu
' pied a room in a down-town block,
and when be did not make his appear
ance as usual yesterday search was
made for him. About S o'clock yester
day afternoon the door of his room
was broken in and his dead body
found, stretched on the floor beside
the bed, a revolver clutched In his
right hand.
He had shot himself through the head
and evidently haJ been dead for sev
eral hours.
An envelope containing a package of
letters that had passed between
Younger and a lady with whom he Is
said to have been much in love was
found on the bureau. The lady, who
is prominently connected, is said to
have reciprocated his affection, and it
was reported at one time that they
were to be married. The lady's rela
tives raised strenuous objections to the

weddln? and a further obstacle was
the fact that It was pointed out that a
paroled prisoner could not legally con
tract in marriage. The couple deter
mined to disregard the objections ot
relatives and an effort was made to
overcome the other obstacle to their
marriage by securing from the state
hoard of pardons a full pardon and
restoration to citisenshlp. This effort
failed and this. It is thought, had
much to do with Younger's determlna
tion to end his life. The lady Is said
now to be in Boise, Idaho, for her
health.

CHICAGO. Oct. 20. A political
quarrel, beginning with an argument
on the coal strike and ending in an
attack upon socialism, ended last

the signal for a geneial fight, In
which Wuff and Schultze were stabbed

the Times nt Teher.tn cables by way
of London:
"It was the stranst of pictures,
the finest spectacle the eye of an art
ist, enamored of quaint contrasts, or
ot the student, searching for the un
changing East, could hope to light up
on. For hours nt a time, streamea
past a eeasless procession of camels.
muls, horses and carts, laden with
paraphernalia. After the adanc
guard of Russlan-dril'ed cavalry came
a regiment of Infantry slouching along
the road in exery variety of patched
and tattered uniform, once sky blue,
Some of them wore two shoes of dif
ferent pattern, most of them none.
The majority were old men and mere
boys. Rifles of all patterns were
stuck promhwously on the hack of un-
objectlng mules. Each large band In
strument crowned, solitary grandeur,
the load of a pack camel.
'When a mishap necessitated re
packing a load In '.he middle of the
road one got a glimpse of costly car
pets, of tents with walls of many col
ors, of robes of honor, silken embroid
eries, quilted bedding. Here and there
a silver ewer or piece of guidy French
furniture, tied on loosely with a bit
of string, kept clanking at the side of
a mule.
"Officers of the household with sll-i
rer staves; flunkeys In scarlet coats; ,
high state officials In full-waisted
blac coats; multahs with green and
white turbans; Persian ladies shrouded
in apple black domlnos and with thick
white veils, jostled in bewildering con
fusion along the roads or satin groupf
In the rest houses.
Further on were the two huge
camps of the Imperial harem, suddenly
commanded by telegram from Europe
to. meet the shah at th frontier,
'The total cost of this motley pll
grlnmg probably was more than $200,-
