Blows Out His Brains at St. Paul Be
cause There Were Impediments
to His Marriage to His
Betrothed Wife.
, ST. PAUL, Oct. 0. James Younger
formerly a member of the notorious
James band of outlaws, which infest
ed the Western country a quarter of
a century ago, committed suicide yes
terday by shooting. He left a letter
to the press, In which he gives as a
reason for his despondency over
continued ill-health and separation
from his friends. The suicide is sup
posed to have occurred about 8 o'clock
yesterday morning. Younger occu
' pied a room in a down-town block,
and when be did not make his appear
ance as usual yesterday search was
made for him. About S o'clock yester
day afternoon the door of his room
was broken in and his dead body
found, stretched on the floor beside
the bed, a revolver clutched In his
right hand.
He had shot himself through the head
and evidently haJ been dead for sev
eral hours.
An envelope containing a package of
letters that had passed between
Younger and a lady with whom he Is
said to have been much in love was
found on the bureau. The lady, who
is prominently connected, is said to
have reciprocated his affection, and it
was reported at one time that they
were to be married. The lady's rela
tives raised strenuous objections to the

weddln? and a further obstacle was
the fact that It was pointed out that a
paroled prisoner could not legally con
tract in marriage. The couple deter
mined to disregard the objections ot
relatives and an effort was made to
overcome the other obstacle to their
marriage by securing from the state
hoard of pardons a full pardon and
restoration to citisenshlp. This effort
failed and this. It is thought, had
much to do with Younger's determlna
tion to end his life. The lady Is said
now to be in Boise, Idaho, for her
health.

ler, sweetheart and bethrothed wife of
Jim Younger, who committed suicide
in St. Paul Saturday night, has been
a resident of this city since last Aug
ust. Today she said:
"Jim, wrote me stating that he had
given up all hope. He was driven to
this act by his persecutors. I am his
wife, you know, spiritually. No scan
dal has ever been attached to my
name, but before God, he Is mine and
mine alone."

KILLED IN POLITICAL QUARREL
Attack on Socialism Results in Fatal
Fight in Chicago Saloon.
CHICAGO. Oct. 20. A political
quarrel, beginning with an argument
on the coal strike and ending in an
attack upon socialism, ended last
night In the death of one man and the
Injury of two others. The fight, whVch
took place in the saloon of James Wal
lace, 313 Fulton street, was participat
ed in by five men.
The dead:
CHARLES Wl'LFF 27 years old.
The Injured:
George Bowes, bartender; cut on
head, neck and body.
David Schultz, stabbed twice In the
right leg and once in left side.
The other two men who participated
in the fight were Frank Brown, who
escaped, and John Fitzgibhons, who is
held as a witness.
During the discussion some one made
an uncomplimentary remark about
socialists. Dowes, who is a so
cialist, was offended. Some one
hurled an empty bottle and that was
the signal for a geneial fight, In
which Wuff and Schultze were stabbed
by Bowes, who was cut himself, and
who claims self-defense. Wulff died
from his wounds shortly afterward.
CALIFORNIA BEAUTY KILLED
Unrequited Lover Causes Murder and
Suicide.
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 20. Marian
Nolan, the young woman who became
famous on the Pacific coast In 1893 as
the Californian Venus, was shot and
killed this afternoon by Edward Mar
chutz who then sent a bullet through
his own brain. The tragedy was the
outcome of a love affair.

fords. The trouble was over a matter
of rent.
