The Portland papers should not be-
come -xcitid because of the objections
raised here and there to the proposal
that the legislature appropriate 1300,-
000 for the Lewis and Clark fair. It
is unkind as well as unwise to inti-
mute that this opposition is actuated I
by sinister motives. The Astorian be-
llevis that every Orcgonian wants to I
see the fair made a great success, and
that the people of the state are prae-
tk-ally a unit In agrteing that the leg-
Islature should make a' suitable appro-
priatlon. In a community of 590,000
wople different opinions are bound to
manifest themselves, and it is indis-
creet to attribute this to lack of pub-
lie spSsrifWe have too much faith In the
Rood sense of Oregonians generally to I
think for a moment that they are un-
loyal, or that an unprosrressive senti-
ment would attempt to defeat the
plans of Hie fair board. The direc- J
tors of the exposition did not fix
$500,000 as the sum that would neces-
sarily be required of the state, but
rather suggested that amount that the
people might "get a line" on what
would be required of them. The sug-
gestlon of the board having been plac-
ed before the people, they are now dis
cussing the matter, as sensible people
should, before arriving at a decision.
The opposition is merely Incidental,
Those who believe $300,000 too large a
eum for the Portland undertaking
are, we think, actuated only by a de-
sire to subserve what they regard as
the best interests of Oregon. If the
nmnunt is too great. It should be re-
dueed; If it Is too small, it should Be
increased, if there is any merit in
the Portland contention that the fair
Is a state undertaking, and of equal
interest to the citizens of Multnomah,
of Clatsop, Wallowa, Curry and Mai-
beur, then there should be no objec-
tion to thorough discussion of the
question outside of the Oregon metrop-
oils. As far as The Astorian is con
earned, it wants to see the fair a great
success, and to this end It will lend
its warmest support It knows that
the people of Clatsop entertain the
c w nd that Astoria will, at
the proper time, come gracefully to
..: tvith her share of support,

I The political forecast of the Journal
In Monday's issue has no significance
whatsoever. Its Information, gleaned
from democratic sources, has not an
lota of truth to hold up its assertion.
The article was written to fill space by
one who certainly Is not In close touch
with the senatorial question. The ar
tide, persumably. was intended for a
"filler" inasmuch as lis range em
braced all classes. The writer cer
tainly exposes his weakness In many

According to the count made by 140
Record Herald reporters at the doors
of 233 of the 666 churches in Chicago
last Sunday, 83,733 men, 104,334 women,
52,2 children, and 15,156 ho are des-
ignated under the head of "unclasS'
ed." a total of 257,541, attended church
that day. This leads the Post-In-
telliseneer to remark that if the
Record-Herald will describe what sort
0f looking creatures are the 15,156 who
are neither men, women nor children,
it will confer a boon on civilization,
Chicago is noted for many things that
are out of the ordinary, but 15.156 non
descripts who attend church are too
much for our credulity. We must have
more light.
