The Pendleton East Oregonlan, which expresses bltterMlsappolntment at the defeat of W. J. Furnish for governor, attributes the loss of the office to Portland and the Willamette valley. "As long as we remain quiet and con tribute our product, our share of taxes and our political support to the va rious factions of Portland and the val ley, we are considered as doing our part well," says that paper. "But when we begin to ask favors in return we are eyed askance and Jealously robbed of our honest deserts. Xow the sena torial question in coming up. What shall we have to say about it? Is there a man among them (the candidates) who Is friendly to tnis part of Oregon Oregon needs a liberal-minded man to represent !t In the senate. Political factionalism should not be considered In the selection." To which the Port land Chronicle offers the following advice: "The Tribune has not far to seek the man who was loyal to the Eastern Oregon candidate or who Is the friend of that section. Hon C. W. Fulton worked like a trojan for East ern Oregon and the whole Republican ticket. He deserves the support of Eastern Or?gon in h:p manly and open effort to be the party candidate tor the senate." If any American Is possessed of a white elephant, he'd better brush it up, for the crown prince of Siam Is officially here. He Is the nation's guest. The prince Is quite a dignitary In his home country and enjoys the unique dtinctlon of being one of 266 children. The king himself had plan ned an American visit, but his de mands In the way of reception made it Impossible for Uncle Sam to take care of him In the regulation Siamese manner. So the prince came instead. He is being fitted for his father's shoes, and comes here In search of practical knowledge. It is to be hoped that he will do better than another member of the royal household, who was sent to Europe for two years to acquire a thorough knowledge of a public school system. Immediately on his return home he was made minister of education, and his first officii act was to declare all pretty school girls members of his harem. The prince is a rmb ms Is an adjective which seems to have be come monopolized by the young lady at the typewriter. It is astonishing what an array of beautiful women are found in stores and offi- beauty will be ' found sitting at the typewriter rather than lolling In a carriage in the park. And yet this pretty young girl Deeds always to be reminded that " beauty is only V Ikin deep," unless k roots in health. Dr. Tierce's Fa vorite Prescription cities diseases which weaken women snd which destroy their strength and beauty. It establishes regularity, stops weakening drains, heals inflammation and ulceration and cures female weak ness. "Several yean ago I suffered sertrtly from female weakness, prolapsus and monorrhagia, and used Dr. Pierce'! -Favorite Prescription with splendid effect, "writes FaunieSbelton, of Waab iiiKtoa, Iowa. Overcrowding Is the motto of the day. The factories are overcrowded The theaters are overcrowded. The tenements are overcrowded. The only reason vhy one does not say that the street cars are overcrowded is because they are something worse. All such overcrowdings, however, are sparse Mess and loneliness compared with the overcrowding of the bar. In 1S?1 there were 5S law schools with 60T3 students. Xow, according to an esti mate made by Professor Hoffcutt, of Cornell, the.e are 120 schools, with H.0W students. Meanwhile the num ber of full-fledged lawyers in the United StaVs is said by the last cen sus to be about IH.cOO. No other pro fession, with the exception of teach ing and medicine, te so populous. It is .iuy:e probable that, at the ap proaching session of the legislature, some member will introduce a bill pro viding for the supply by the state of school books. The law Is one that is badly needed In Oregon. Many pupils attending the public schools are un able to secure all the books necessary for the courses taugnt, and it seems only right that those children should be given an opportunity to obtain a thorough education. A law of this kind would have the effect of doing away with the constant changing of text books, and in many other lesnects of increasing the usefulness of our j school system. It is claimed that Harvey Scott, who has repeitedly stated that he was not a candidate for the United Suites sen ate, has left his candidacy for the po sition in the hands of friends, expect ing them to urge his claims while he is spending the winter in Europe. He expects to return, however, in time to be on the ground when the leg'slature meets. Mr. Scott will probably make a strong fight, but no man with all the sins of the Portland Oregoniaj hanging over his head will ever be elected to office. -East Oregonlan. Over In Seattle the papers some of them are demanding a city regulation that will prohibit the early morning blowing of factory whistles. The prac tice is a nuisance and ought to be abated. The blowing of steamboat whistles should likewise be prohibited by law. If trains can get along with out ear-splitting whistles, boats can dispense with their annoying blasts. Astoria needs just such an ordinance as that asked for in Seattle.
