Certain ly, both 'Portland and Astoria are more advantageously situated than Se attie and Tacoma. Th's beins true, then, why doesn't the Oregonian demand better rates than those extended to the Sound cities? IT Astoria, being farther from the wheat fields than Portland, isn't entitled to as low rates as those in vogue to Portland, vhy should not the Oregon metropolis, with its better lo cation and closer proximity to the grain belt be given lower rates than those extended to the Sound? The ab surd Inconsistency of the Oregonian's contention is painfully apparent. The statement tint the rate ihargM to Portland is not great enough to cover the haul to Astoria is likewise ridiculous. The present rate is extor tlon. and with a reduction, of 35 to 40 tr cent would be ample to cover the 100-mile haul down the river. The Oregonian is quite willing that Portland should remain on an equal basis with -.he Sound ports, but It de mands that Astoria shall be placed at a still greater aisaavaniage. As to the cost of carrying the cargo of the Lime Branch down the river, It will be found that the rail rate will be exceeded by the time the 1.200 tons lighterage is placed aboard.
