THR ASTORIAN PUBLISHING CO., P. M. MA HER, Manager. - The mangement of the Astorian will i today pass into the hands of P. M. Ma her, a newspaper man of wide experi ence, who, with the assignee of a cap able staff, will give to Astoria a news paper that will command the attention not alone of Oregon, but of the entire country. A town Is known and its commercial standing weighed to a great extent by the appearance of its newspapers. The Astorian will expand under Ita new management who will drag the town's resources front under the proverbial "bushel" and show the world what we have to offer as a lo cation for manufactories of all kinds. There probably never was a sports man who has so fairly and deservedly won the hearts of the American peo ple as Sir Thomas Upton, The an nouncement that he will send another .challenge to New Tork means that in the Interests of genuine friendly ri valry, the world will watch and learn something more about boat building. Sir Thomas will get a warm welcome on this side and should he be success ful this tirne American yachtsmen will hand the envied cup to him more read ily, and with better heart, than to any other man outside of our own country But we shall try hard to hold it all the same. From ministers of the gospel, what ever be their denomination, the public has a right to demand some degree of tact and good judgment The word "gentleman" is so abominably mis-used that the very word is hateful, out for lack of any other expression in Eng lish, it should designate one patt oi a minister's whole existence. The preacher whom President Roosevelt asked to conduct a series of seimons on the occasion of the anniversary of McKinley's death showed such utter lack of good feeling and good sense as to ever bar liim from again preach ing a semi-official sermon. We can imagine how the manly, generous heart of Theodore Roosevelt revolted from making such an occoasion an oppor tuity for the pulpit to offer fulsome admiration for the living at a meet ing to honor the noble dead. No one lamented William McKinley's death trore than his loyal friend, Theodore Roosevelt The fact that the presi dent's nobly conceived idea was spoil ed by the bad taste of the man stlected to preach the sermon is deplorable and left Mr. Roosevelt In an embarrassing position. We must admit that Great Britain has outdone us in the matter of gen erosity to the conquered, especially as they are of another race. The Boer demands must stand unique in history for their magnificent coolness, or utter failure to grasp the situation. If the conqueror In future Is to compensate the conquered for being beaten. It will certainly be a great revolution In hu man affairs and have a strong ten dency to end nil war a most desir able consummation, but not likely to eventuate along those llnes.-Standnrd Union. It Is now conceded that President Roosevelt will be renominated by the Republkans In IStH. Recog-ihlng the overwhelming tide in his favor, the Republicans of New York state have decided to endorse President Riwsevelt, and enough states have done likewise to make his nomination sure. A marine engineer by name of L. A. Booth, got Into a saloon with a well-filled pocketbook. At first his death was put down to heart dis ease, but as suspicious eircu nstanc s came to the notice of the police, an autopsy was made which showed that the engineer was murdered by being beaten over the head by some s.ft weighted Instrument Suspected peo ple are under arrest and evidence points to a pretty clear case of rob bery and murder.
