VllE MORNING ASTORIAN, Wl-IIN iSDA Y. SF.l'TllMIUm 17. I!HW Telephone, Main ML TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION. DAILY. Bent by mall, per year Bent by mart, per month Served by carrier, per month .. SEMI- WEEKLY, gent by ma'.l. per year, in advance II 00 The Astorian guarantee to Ita ad vertiser the largest circulation ct any newspaper published on the Columbia Elver. S. C. TURNER, Business Manager. A preat deal of noise ha been made about a reckless utatement that the "Eureka Packing Company" had been taking and canning fish out of season. Irt the first place, no company of that name exslsts, which might settle the matter. But It Is known which can nery Is referred to, and we have tak en some trouble to find out the ex act truth to the best of our ability. At least two contemporaries made the error cf thinking that the season opened on the 15th, when, as a matter of fact, the 10th Is the correct date. On that dateand not before, the can nery referred to commenced to work, for the benePt of, and at the re quest of, the fishermen, who wanted money and made the request, the company at the time not wishing for their own sakes to operate. Further more the question has been asked, "What Is our fishwarden doing." Our worden has nothing to do with that company; It is out of his jurisdic'Ion. So much for the Ignorance on the sub ject It would be just as well here, as jt any other time, to let the read ers of the Astorian know, that any cannery running against the law will receive the attention it deserves. And also this fact, that no president, vice president or owner can touch th;s ed itorial page or influence it In any man ner whatever. What we look for is the plain truth, and that Is the plain duty of ever Independent editor to find. When he has a curb on his pen his usefulness is gone. n our case we should take it as an unpardonable In sult, an Insult which has not been of fered and we believe never will be. I In these days of monopoly It Is some times ussless to demur against things as they be. But it is about time that some one reminds thelv nutocratlc high nesses, the O. R. N. Company, that their attempt to handle the shipping trade of this port Is absolutely rotten. One captain after another makes his complaint, and they meet with the bland, hoggish smile that sickens. If a roar be made a black mark goes against the ship and she might pos sibly wait longer. To have vessels ly ing for two or three days eating their cargo up, simply on account of the In adequate towage system of on? body of iso -called business men, is ridiculous. It is an injury to this city and is ob taining for this harbor an un-nviabie name for slowness. As so many East ern capitalists are turning th ir eyes to Oregon we call their special atten- 1W f - Ilave ''eves lj!.:"'er tlian their stomachs," according to un old saying. As a" ('.tiF.equeiice the foundation of serious s .11.11111. ii trouble is often luid in cL:W!:oi ;1. For children with weak" digestion or whose stomachs are diseased, Doctor Pierce's CoMen Medical I'iscovcry may be confidently recommended. It cures dibeascs of the stomach and otlictorgans of digestion and nutrition, so that the nourishment contained in food is per fectly assimilated and the puny child is built up by food into a condition of robust health. Dr.'l'ierce's Golden Medical Discovery contains neither alcohol no-r narcotics. Accept no aiibjlitnie for "Golden Med ical Discovery." There is nothing "just as good" for diseases of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition. Mm. Ella Gardner, of W.iterview, Midillrsex Co.,Va., write : " My little daughter U enjoying pltudid health. I am glad 1 found a doctor who could cure ray child. Whenever ahe feels badly I give her Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery and ahe ia aooti all ritiit. She took twelve bottle of the 'Golden Medical Discov ery,' eight bottle of 1 Pellet,' and one botile o( of Dr. Sage' Catarrh Remedy and ahe 1 well.
