Tilt MORNING ASTOMAN. TUESDAY. SliPTOUIIiK 1(1, I1K1J THE CAUSE Of FIRES Colorado Scientists Propound a New Theory Etna Man Testifies. DENVER Sopt- .IS- The prevaUnoe forest fires In Colorado, wnloh an? de vastating forests, has nroued scien tists to the theory that a great num. ber of meteors have fallen In the Rooky Mountains tearing up the earth to a great extent. These meteors drop in heavy pine forests, explode and start the fires. Local scientists are mak ing a study of this new development, ; SAW BLUE LIGHT. In connection' with the telegram printed above an Interesting story was given to us early this morning by Mr. W. L. White. On Thursday last Mr. White was about 22 miles up the Lewis river and some 10 miles above the Etna post office. About I: SO p. vn. the sky turned to almost darkness, soon afteryards to red, almost like the northern light, and then for a few minutes distinct blue, like the color which emanates from an electric machine. There was - no sign of fire up to that moment, but shortly afterward biases ware seen on the hills where the blue light had ap peared. Among all the stories of the fire to hand, none Is mort Interesting than Mr. White's, for the reason that two hours after hearing It came the telegram announcing the belief of Col orado scientists that meteors had been dropping and setting fire to the heavy timber lands. The phenomena which are described from the East co incide with what our informant graph ically and Intelligently described. AH the surrounding neightbors gathered at the home of Mr. Prank Bailey on the Lewis river and formed a bucket brigade to save the homestead. The house itself was saved by their efforts, but the barn and other outhouses were burned. A large number of fam ilies were sheltered thera. One old inn nme unknown, and a young man named Lacey are missing. They fought hard against the flames, but fail ed to report to shelter. It is not known whether they met death or not, but the gravest fears are entertained, as all enquiries for their whereabouts have failed to locate them. Nearly all the families are homeless and pen niless. A POWERFUL SEARCHLIGHT. The latest invention is that of a sig nal light which it Is claimed will pen etrate the heaviest fog for a distance of half a mile. It it is a success many accidents on both land and sea can be averted. Much interest is being man ifested In the discovery, the same as in any other Invention that Is Intended to save life. This is the1 reason so many people hve been interested In Hostetter's Stomach Bitten during the past SO years. It is recognized as the best health maker and blood purifier In existence, and with good health and blood disease cannot find a foothold. It is therefore specially adapted m to persons in Ill-health and who suffer from heartburn, indigestion, dyspep sia, constipation, or malaria, f,-ver and ague. Try It . FRASER RIVER SALMON PACK. Amounts to 250,000 Cases Error In Computation. VANCOUVER, B. C, Sept. 8.-The Frazer river salmon pack will be over 250,000 and the $43,000 which trembled in the balance will be on the canners" side of the transaction. It will be remembered that a week before the canneries were closed the official pack was given as 272,000 cases, minus 40, 000 cases brought from the traps. It was estimated that not more than 3000 cases could be put up in the six days by the canneries. In other words it was officially stated that the approxi mate pack would be 235,000 cases, tt now obtains that the canneries erred in telephoning their pack. On the 15th of August they gave their returns to the St.h and 10th, or a week before, not taking into account the fish put up during the big run, the reason being that the returns of a week before was all they could compute at that time. For this reason a trip of the cannery officials to the canneries shows a much larger pack than anticipated. The Tradesman. SHAH LIVES HIGH.
