THE SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., Atlanta, 6a. FISH WARDEN'S REPORT. Show Increase of 100.000 Cases In teresting Statements. Report of the Master Fish Warden for August, 190J. to the Honorable Board of Fish Commissioners, Salem, Ore. The spring fishing season, which closed August ylS. on the Columbia River, proved to be very flattering for the artificial work that has been done on the river, in that the product far exceeded in quantity, with the quality fully up to the average, of any pack that has been made on the river for several years past. As a result of the pack on the Co lumbia River the past two seasons, all opposition to the advantages of arti ficial propagation has been overcome, and now a generally recognised fact, that the salmon product In our riv ers can be limited only by the number of young fry planted. This eliminates beyond any ques tion of doubt the possibility of the industry ever becoming extinct, as long as we maintain proper rivers in which to liberate the young fry, and the Pacific Ocean remains at our doors ready to receive and feed and care for the young salmon until they reach maturity. The pack of the present season has been about 100,000 cases more than last year's pack, which means an addition al $500,000 to those directly Interested in the product This is not a bad showing when we stop to consider that it was due entirely to the result of artificial work, and that the artPiclal work carried on by the different de partments during 1SS8, all told, did not amount to fcS.000. The price paid this season for the raw fish ranged from ( cents to i cents per pound, and for a few very choice large fish, as high as 8 rents was paid. The average price was about S cents; which meant a sum of nearly 1 500,000, paid out to the fishermen and takers of fish for the raw product A conservative 'estimate places the season's pack at 426.000 cases, includ ing what went Into cold-storage. The receipts of my office from ac count licenses issued during the month of August amounted to the sum of $595.40, which was In accordance with the following: 111 individual fishing licenses... till 00 26 gill-net fishing licenses 65 00 40 set-net fishing licenses 40 00 1 seine license (720 feet long)... 14 40 2 seine licenses (each 1200 feet long) 48 00 2 seine licenses (each 1500 feet long) 60 00 1 seine license for 3000 ft., addi tional web for seine No. 11... 6 00 1 seine license for 300 ft, addi tional web for seine No. 14... t 00 8 fish dealers licenses (1st class) 80 00 2 fish dealers licenses (2d class) 30 00 Additional license fee for dealer No. 2 35 00 1 fish canner's license (1st class) 100 00 Total 1595 ' The report then details the work be ing done at the hatcheries on the Clackamas, Salmon, Mackenzie, Grand Ronde and at the coast hatchery sta tions on Wilson. Big Elk, Alsea, Sius law, Cmpqua. South Coos and Co-quelle-Rivers, and reports the assign ment of J. W. Robinson to take charge of the hatchery work on Alsea river, and Eiward E. CHICAGO, Sept. 9.-The discovery of three human bodies at 709 and 2711 State street has started an investiga tion of the premises b the police, the coroner and the city health depart ment One of the bodies was that of an adult and the authorities are pre pared to believe either that a murder was committed or that it is simp'y an evidence of an illegal burial. It was found at 2711 State street. The other two bodies were those of babies, they were found in a wooden box covered with sawdust in the undertaking place of Charles Johnson, 2709 State street On account of the suspicion which the finding of the bodies has aroused, a thorough examination of the prem ises will be made to discover by exca. vation whether other remains have been burled there. There are surface Indications which lead the coroner and the health authorities to suspect that the back yards of the two places Are in many respects like other ulcers of sores, and this resemblance often proves fatal. Valuable time is lost in fruitless efforts to heal carried to the ulcer or sore tne r.eanng process begins, the discharge ceases and the place heals over and new skin forms. S. S.
