TURNER, Business Malinger. The death of little Claude Clausen, following the episode of the three boys who caused their parents bo much an xiety last week, brings up the old question ot ""What shall we do with our boys?" It Is no easy matter to answer. From the time that Adam's tons got wild and fought, through all ages boyish sports have had their sway for good or evil. If boys are tied to their nurse s or mother's apron strings they will grow up efflminate, probably weakly, and rarely with the true grit and self-reliance that makes a man. On the other hand, if you turn them loose to get fresh air and rough It, some will get hurt or drown ed. With girls It Is different,; the trouble begins with them only at the age they understand the price and val ue of a Gibson shirt-waist, an ostrich feather or the new style of felt hats. Explain those things to her at four teen, give her a long mirror at fifteen, let her have a beaux at sixteen, and the troubles begin. Boys begin at five and keep the game up till death gen erally. It Is certain that the task of bringing up a family Is not an easy one, and the parents who do it suc cessfully should hold a high place In the esteem of their fellow men. The amount of space being given In Eastern papers to the salmon fisher ies shows that the work being done out here is atractlng attention that cannot fall to be of benefit to Ore gon. Any Idea that additional capital and competition would mean lowering prices, or be In any way Injurious, is to be set aside aa absurd. The more Interest Easterners take In our fish the more they will eat and cause to be eaten. The more men nnd carKal the better for the community at large The hatchery question is referred to in many papers and this state Is con gratulated on Its successful results. It is a general rule that as a country becomes populated that the b?st ffh and game get scarce. Salmon is too useful a food to be Jeopardise ruth lessly and every step taken to con serve our industry for which Astoria Is so excellently situated Insures to us a source of revenue so long as that conservation shall last The city, town, village or whatever It calls Itself, .of Pittsfield, may drape whatever reputation it had in obloquy. Not merely because It was the scene cf an accident to the president's car riage, but because "the light let In to the place shows a disgraceful and melancholy state of things. The offi cials had requested that no cars be run. The company ran them. The company's motorman was arrested, but has not been tried, and will not he until January. Why? Because the Judge is the president of the stret car company. For this flagrant farce of juBtlce the people of Pitlsfield are to blame. They have not backbone enough to stand and stir porridge. It will probably be some time before the disgraced hamlet will be so hon ored apaln. In the meantime they can ponder on the unenviable position their street car company and its avaricious president have placed them In. Messrs'. Beale and Williams, who shot Marriott, the editor of a San Fran cisco weekly, will have more praise then censure. Marriott had, without directly mentioning the name, done, a serious Injury to an Innocent girl and offered thereby an Insult to a family already In distress. The San Fran cisco press Is notoriously unscrupulous nnd It Is well that its yellow color should get nn occasional check. A free Dress Is all right as a rule, hut the press should not be free for such cowardly uses as Ill-bred malicious brutes as Marriott. Men who will not protect a woman's goad name are bad enough but men who assail the honor of an Innocent woman deserve all that Marriott got. The enormous increase both la sav ings bank and national bank deposits during the past year shows the confi dence the people have in the preaent administration. Money will talk and so do these figures. The money in cir culation is $28.40 per capita, the high est point It has ever reached. During the Democratic term, lSSi-9 It drop ped til per capita. Other figures show such an abundance of money as to make a money scare hardly pojsi ble at present, and that confidence al ways brings money. The Joe Creek property In Siskiyou County. California, has passed Into the hands of a 1300,000 syndicate. Owing to Its peculiar situation the only way cf Insrress or egress is by way of Jack son and Josephine counties In this state. Chance for a boom in Southern Oregon, A blue book has been issued at Spo kane giving D33 names as the "soct.ty" of that cit$ and there is trouble about it A correspondent writes to ask why the figure five was put In. We are willing to answer editorially any reasonable question but conundrums belong to a column we do not run. OTHER CITIES. Coos Bay Is a center of Interest this summer. It Is said that the bay is to be the Pacific terminus ot a trans continental railroad. Ships of SO feet draft may enter the bay and proceed as far as Empire City. With a trans. continental road and a harbor that will accommodate SO footers, together with the coal beds that already are worked, there seems every indication that Coos county is to boom. Hills- boro Independent. Since January last the Northwest' em Pacific ports have sent over 2,000,- 000 bushels of wheat, including flour, to the ports of South Africa, This is said to be more than double the amount that was ever shipped there before in an entire season and It 1 expected that at least 3,000,000 bush els will be sent to South Africa from Portland and the Puget Sound ports before the close of the year Butte Inter-Mountain. A rumor comes from the far West that a stream has been discovered which is filled with oil, and that it swarms with fish. This sounds like the death knell of a great French in dustry, and as though America would soon be canning ready made sardines. Four Track News.
