pretty suddenly. He hopes Boon to

REPORT Of FISH PACK
I.MIMUITAXT VWVHKH VOM
IMLKI.
I''orly lr Cent Nliortajfe From
I'Mtml Hiipply Avtk
Ciihcs perjlont.
Practically complete returns are now
In for this season's fish puck, and the
figure show that there will be a
shortage of fully forty per cent The
strike among tbe fishermen partly ac
count for the large deficit. It Is
claimed that the fishers for th Pa
cific Packing and Navigation Company
were the originator of the strike, but
it quickly spread until P6 men were
in line. And it was a .strike of a
unloue tvoe. A bund was organized
in which every available musical in
strument was called into action. Ac
cordeons played the melody and
mouth organs the tenor while every
thing which would produce a sound did
lis work. Headquarters were' on the
sandy beach, where all business was
transacted. The so-called "captains
of labor" were made to sign the
agreements on the beach, as the men
refused to enter any office. It was
five day of revelry for the men, but
not quite such good fun for the own
ers. At tha conclusion the men fa
ruded the streets with brooms and
any thing else that coincided with a
fisherman's Idea of a arade.
The returns are as follows:
Alaska Packing Ass'n, (4 canneries,
IM boats). 207,000 cases; Alaska Fish
ermen's Packing Co. (23 boats), 37,000
cases; Columbia River Puckers Asso-
latlon, (29 boats) 27,000; Portlund-.Vlas
ka I'm king Association (29 boats), 34,
600 euaes; Alaska Salmon Co., 24,,OO0
cases; Pacific Packing & Navigation
'o. (61 bouts) 70,000 cases.
This makes a total of 39S.400 cases.
A study of these figures will show
that the average number of cases to
the boat the Alaska Fishermen's Pack
ing Co. averaged 1426. The Alaska
Puckers' Association came second with
1302, not including three traps which
would reduce the average. Portland
Alusku Packing Association, 1270; Pa-
citlu Packing & Navigation Co., 1147;
Columbia River Packers Association,
1000, and Alaska Salmon Co., 927. It
Is reported that the Alaska Fisher
men's Packing Company' men made
strenuous efforts after the strike to
get ahead and as figures show they
top the list on average per boat.
Good authorities advise us that in
Southenst Alaska the pack of red Alas-
kas Is very short, probably not more
than 60 per cent of the usual quan
tity and that even Dart of that is
made up In dog fish. The market has
advanced from 90 to 93 cents a (tox
in and will likely go to a dollar or
more. The strike, shortly explained
seems to have been caused by the fish
ermen refusing to fulfill their con
tracts. Each cne hud an Individual
contract and shipped out under Its con
ditions. Th-y then demande.1 new
contracts and repudiated the old ones.
Mr. F. M. Warren was the first to
have to face the music. He will set
tle on original contract only and it is
understood that all the other compan
ies will stand by him.
Orders for red Alaska have exceed
ed the amount of pack and the cases
will have to be distributed pro rata.
Medium reds or silversldes are unsold
and that may help out considerably
on the "red Alaska" deficiency. In
any way early purchases have turned
cut to be a snap.
BIG BEAR AT SMITH'S POINT.
News was brought to town yester
day that a large bear had become a
daily visitor to a Chinese vegetable
garden round Smith's point. The bear
carries no arms so their was no dif
ficulty In organizing a strong posse
to protect the radishes and cabbages
and bring Die outlaw Bruin In dead or
Hlive. probably dead. The posse was
well armed and consisted of Billy
Martin, Frank Cook, George Stevens,
P. A. Stokes, J. M. Elsworth, Jo'.in
Connor, Archie McLean and William
Beusley. The latter Is the reputed
bear-shooter of the party." President
Roosevelt regrets his Inability to be
there.
3 p. m, The posse is approaching.
4 p. m. The b ar is eating onions.
4:30 p. m. T,wo small boys have lost
their clothes and are near the bare.
5 p. in. Halt made for tonight.
5:30 p. m. Returned to headquarters
to rest until daylight.
6:30 p. m. The bear Is making let
tuco salad in the Chinaman's kitchen.
NOTED MARINE ENGINEER
VISITS ASTORIA.
George Vhler, national president of
the Marine Engineers' Association,
was entertained by the local' englners
at their own hall. Mr. Uhler was met
at the depot on Sunday morning by
V. J. Mahan, the local president, and
C. T. Smith, the secretary, and escort
ed to the Occident. Later in the day
a meeting was held and Mr. Vhler
gave a very Interesting account of
what the association was doing all
over the states and the legislation now
pending for the benefit of the asso
ciation, Mr. Uhler has occupied the
position of national president for over
eleven years and his presence ha done
mueh to enthuse the members here.
Visitors were present from Portland,
Seattle and San Francisco. " After the
meeting a goodly luncheon wa pro
vided, followed by cigar and a gen
eral social chat. The president left
Philadelphia In June and In addition
to visiting many large cltle, took a
trip to Alaska. He left yesterday
morning to spend a few day In Port
land, after which he leavf for.Phllu-J

DARING ROBBERY.
Eagle Drug Store Robbed D rs Forc
ed In With Heavy Instruments.
Early yesterday morning the well
known drug store on the corner of
Bond and Eighth street was wa
broken Into. The hour I uncertain,
but the officer on the beat reports that
everything wa secure up to 2 a. m.
Other passers-by saw nothing wrong
at 2:15, S:4S and 3 a. m., respectively.
It I therefore concluded that an en
trance wa gained betwen 1:30 a. m.
nnd daylight.
The main doors are swinging and the
slight space between them shows the
catch of the lock. At that point a
"Jimmy" or some such Instrument
was used to force the door a far
apart as possible. The bolt at top
and bottom, however, would not yield,
and -some stron gpiece of Iron, prob
ably a crow-bar, was used with such
force as to split the panel of the door
at the place where the bolt is let Into
the wood. As soon as the lower bolt
was thus released there was sufficient
play In the middle of the door to force
the lock. All of this must have taken
some time and It Is extraordinary that
no one should have witnessed the
work, as there are so many late peo
ple at that part of town. The thieves
got till) in small change out of the
register, which has hitherto been left
unlocked at nleh't. In addition they
got four large bottles of expensive per-

! value of 110 or 330. The burglar se
lected a hundred Export cigars with
j which to regale themselves. Nothing
was known of the robbery until after
o'clock In the morning. The police
are retldnt, but are following up a
strong clue.
