said Major Hear,

"If Astoria could strike for the
toast country, It would be u rival of
San Francisco or Portland. Hut after
all, none of our tople have realized
until liiluiy the vast resources exist
ing in the region between the Coast
Range nnd the Pacific ocean. Port
land blows for the 'Great Inland Em
pire' Ix-calise the development of that
region Is to enlarge the market for
Portland, Its nutural commercial cen
ter, lfut there Is more latent wealth
In one acre of the narrow Const none
of Oregon than In twenty-live of the
Inland desert. Astoria is the natural
tenter of that magnificent region. San
Francisco ha put on marine tran

ting it, when by similar methods It
Is more accessible to Astoria. Ship
plug wheat or any other staple pro
duction of a region is not commerce,
which is entirely a transaction of mon
ey and not of tonnage. The fellow,
who e!ls the most goods makes the
money; It Is not made by the team
which drags the goods to the custo

living. I consider that what helps
Portland helps Astoria, and vice
versa."
