SAN JOSE, Cal., Aog. 8.-A series of daring highway robberies which re sulted In the death of one of the rob bers occurred on the Montreal road this evening. Two young men, apparently little more than boys In age, held up and robbed a dozen different men, until overtaken by a posse near Gilroy. A running fight ensued and one of the robbers was shot through the stomach. Emulating the convict Tracy, he blew out his own brains. The other man surrendered. NATIVES ARB DESTITUTE. Unable to Plant New Crop and All Old One Has Been Destroyed, WASHINGTON, Aug. S.-Major B. K. West, of the commissary depart ment, writing from Manila to General Weston, chief commissary, has the fol lowing to say concerning the feeling of natives in the Philippines: "I was in hopes that the closing up Of the campaign in Batangas and La- guha would end the feeding of the na- 11 ' though the tamps have been broken up. ine natives were leit in a cesu. tute condition; had been jnable to plant new crops; all the old crops had been destroyed in the military o itera tions and so the work nas to go on. General Bell was in the city and I asaea mm aoout the number of na- lives he was feeding. He tojd me that In Bitangas he was feeding approxi mately 250,00 people, in Laguna he coull not tell the exact number but I judge from the quantity that we sup ply that there must be about half as many." BODY IDENTIFIED AS THE AIRSHIP INVENTOR. NEW YORK, Aug. 9. It is beleived the body of the man found drowned in the Sound near Mamaroneck Thurs day with a satchel containing machin ists' tools tied around the neck was that of Hugo RJngswell, of this city. RlngwelL who was a machinist, was highly educated and spoke four or five languages. As an inventor he had perfected plans for an air ship and , had learned the machinists trade in order that he might build the craft. Hie employer hald Rinpwell seemed to be in comfortable circustances but spoke little of his personal affairs of which nothing: is known. Before leaving his boar-ling hou In the city, the inventor destroyed all his drawings and models and told the landlady to say he had son to Ger many. FLY CASTING CONTENT. SAX FRANCISCO. As?. . Great damage is being done to timber and grain. The odor of burning wheat is noticeable here. FOREST FIRE IN THE ' FISHBANK COUNTRY BUTTE, Mont., Aug. A special to the Miner from Kalsipell says a fierce forest fire is raging in the Flshbank I bequeath to my children Scrofula with all its attendant horrors, humiliation and suffering. This is a Strange legacy to leave to posterity ; a heavy burden to place upon the shoulders of the young-. This treacherous disease dwarfs the body and hinders the growth and development of the faculties, and the child born of blood poison, or scrofula-tainted parentage, is poorly equipped for life's duties. Scrofula is a disease with numerous and varied Symptoms; enlarged glands or tumors about the neck and armpits, catarrh of the bead, weak eyes and dreadful skin eruptions upon different parts of the body show the presence of tubercular or scrofulous matter in the blood. This dangerou9 and stealthy disease entrenches itself securely in the system and attacks the bones and tissues, destroys the red corpuscles of the blood, resulting in white swelling, a pallid, waxy appearance of the skin, loss of strength and a gradual wasting away of the body. S. S. S. combines both purifying and tonic properties, and is guaran- lost properties to the blood and quickens the circulation, bringing a healthy color to the skin and vigor to the weak and emaciated body. Write us about your case and our physicians will theerfully advise and help you in every possible way to regain your health. Book on blood and Ikia diseases free. THE SWIFT SPECITIC CO..
