Aug. 8,-The United States and llaytien Telegraph & Ca ble Company has appealed to the state and navy departments to prevent the cutting of the cable at Cape Haytlen by the revolutionists. A cablegram 'a sent to Commander McCrea, of the Machias, directing him to prevent the cutting of the cable. FERRYBOAT NEW BRUNS WICK BURNED. Caused by Overturning a Lamp In the Engine Room. NEW YORK, Aug. 8. An overturn ed lamp tn the engine room of the ferrvboat New Brunswick, plying be tween New Brunswick, N. J., and New York, set (Ire to the boat and so ran Idly did the flames spread that thte vessel hod to be beached on the Mead ows, about three miles below New Brunswick, and allowed to burn to the water's edee. The boat carriitl a crew of 23 men, and there were 16 pas-sen-rs aboard. . Captain George P. Rogers, of Brook lyn, gave orders that the life boats hould be lowered when It oecame ap parent that they could not i uccessfully be fought and the passengers were tak en ashore so speedily that there was r.o excitement The engineer of the boat, William Traver, of Bath, N. T., was badly burned about the face and hands. Two race horses were pushed over board and swam ashore uninjured. The vessel was valued at 0,000; par tially Insured. CAPITALIST COMMITS SUICIDE. CHICAGO, Aug. 8. Lucius Clark, who a few years ago was one of the most prominent promoters and cap italists In Chicago and who was as sociated with Charles T. Yerkes in the building of surface and levnl i.iil roads, has committed sui ide I y di ink ing carbolic acid at his residence, 2472 Kenmore avenue. His wife and five children were In the house at the time. Latterly Mr. Clark had been engaged in mining operations and promoting, and lack of suf-x-ss In that line drove him to take his life. Mr. ("lark returned from Colorado re--ently, where his mining Interests were centered. Business worry had produced mental depression, which had been noticed by his family and had caused alarm. In the last few days, however, there had been a no ticeable Improvement in his condition. BLOODHOUNDS TO HUNT FOR THEOLOGICAL STUDENT NEW YORK. Aug. 8. Trained blood hounds will be taken to Chatham, N. J., to assist in the search for young Wilberforce Ogden, a theological stu dent who disappeared on Monday from his father's home, where he had been ill from over study. The Passaic river has been dragged and every part of the big swamp near Chatham has been hunted through without a trace of the missing young man hav ing been discovered. AGED RAILROAD BUILDER DEAD. EVANSVII.LE, Ind., Aug. 8.-Albert O. Dutland,' aged 62, is dead at his home in this city. He once owned a line of steamboats plying between Ev ansvllle and New Orleans.
