TRADES UNIONISM.
Trades-unionism,' as represent
ed by Mr. Gompers and other
labor leaders of his type, is , re
lated to the trades-unionism of an
earlier time in the sense that it is
directly descended from it, says
the Oregoniau. But it is very
far from being the same thing.
What in its earlier form was a
mere blind and oftentimes incen
diary force operating by instinct
rather than judgment against
conditions passionately hated but
not at all understood, has by pro-1
cess of time and the changed con
ditions of the country grown in
to a regulated agency seeking to
gain and hold for the man who
toils a fair share in the rewards
of industry and fair treatment in
its operations. In his public
utterances Mr. Gompers makes
the aims and purpose of organ
ized labor in its modern and mod
ified form very plain, and so
' completely justifies' them iu the
ory as to disarm all but the most
besetted prejudice and the gross-
'. est selfishness. : r-.. ? '-is' , -: ;
Trades unionism is the natural
and legitimate corollary of the
union of capital in the partner
ship and the corporation, and
"""tmderjhe modern system of in
dustrial organization it has be
come a positive necessity. The
jest that the corporation has no
soul is based on a profound truth,
the same truth which lies back of
and enforces organization of labor.
When employer and employed
worked in small ways together,
the facts of personal acquaintance
and friendly sympathy smoothed
all or m)st differences between
them. But when in the evolu-;

of poor digestion, inactive Kidneys and other organs of elimination are

MR-SCHWAB'S MANSION.
Harper's Weekly is not grudg
ing space- in New York for Mr.
Schwabs new two-audra-half-
million-dollar house on a million-
dollar lot, says an exchange. No
more it should. It means three
and a half million dollars put in
to circulation and the rearing of
a palace on a spot that will be
j pleasing to sight-seers, and will
do much toward beautifying the
city. Another half million will
be required to furnish it. Mr
Schwab is spending a good deal
of money for the pleasure and
comfort of the children of the
poor of New York by establishing
recreation grounds for them, to
be reached by a sail down the
bay, and there seems no reasou
why he should not build a palace
for himself. The architecture of
New York is not at all injured by
such residences as have been
built there, notably by a few men
from the west, nor will the
Schwab mansion hurt it in the
least New York is a big town,
but there is still room there for a
hundred palaces. It is a good
way for the wealthy to spend their
money.
NOT HIS FAULT.
Nebraska has been shaken by
an earthquake. Mr. Bryan was
away. Was nis absence the cause
of the convulsion? Ought he not
to stay at home hereafter, and
see to it that nothing happens
again? New England can take
care of itself. That part of the
country is in no need of his fos
tering care. Should not Mr.
Bryan keep watch and ward
against earthquakes in his own
homestead, and stray no longer
among strangers.
