The arrival of the Exomlnefr here

cal s porta, who wlahtd to read W. W.
Naughton'a account of the ritaslm-mon-Ji-ffries
fight, whioh wa pro
nounced by that expert on sporting
matter to have been a gigantic fake.
According to Naughton, he handed to
Mayor Schmita, the day before the
fight, a sealed envelope containing a
tatement made to Mm by a peraon
w ho had been at the training quarter
of one of the principals, and which
was to the effect that Fit waa to
lose In the eighth round. The letter
was opened by the mayor after the
fight, and the tip therein proved to
be a correct one. Naughton raid he
thought as the fight progreeeed tfhat
the statement would prove to be a
wild one, so fine a showing did the
Comtsliman make. He say Fits had
Jeffrie cut to piece when the final
blows were delivered. He believea the
flgltf to have been a swindle pure and
simple, and says a man who went out
from a Molar plexus punch could not
within 12 or IS second have found
voice to make the loud announcement
that came from Fit. The CornWh-
man'a showing, says Naughton, waa
the best ever made by him In his ca
reer, and he think Fita would eas

arrangement. Locally the belief la

The Chamber of Commerce cotnltt-e
on commerce and navigation made an
exteiihtve report last night on the Im
provement of Astoria harbor. The
work heretofore done on tttie lower
river has not been of any eapecial bene
fit to this city, but has, it la believed,
resulted In the shoahng of the chan
nel In front of Astoria, as well as that
below the city. The report of the
committee, after reviewing the work
done, conclude with the following
qulrlea: " Should the middle channel
above Tongue Point be opened, or
should the channel be kept across the
hogback? If across the hogback, then
should It be thrown down against Tay
lor sands, or opened In the vicinity of
its former position? Will not a chan
nel acrosa to the O. R. A N. wharf

wharf to Tongue PolntT Doea It not.
by changing the amount of water along
the city front or carrying more aitt.
injure the channel below Aatorla? Doe
the dredging and constant atirring up
of aand above Injure the Astoria har
bor? Do the Desdemona sands, aa an
Island, menace the channel from Asto
ria to the Sea? What should be done
not only to Improve but preserve the
harbor of Astoria from Tongue Point to
Fort Stevens? The report of the com
mittee, while without definite recom
mendation, will be forwarded to the
engineers, as well as to Senator Mitch
ell and Congressman Wlllamtlm, and
an effect will be made to see that low
er river Improvements are hereafter
made wtlth a view to the protection
of Astoria harbor. It Is the purpose
of the chamber to also secure a sur
vey of Tunings bay, as part of Aato
rla harbor, and efforts In that direction
are now being made.
Andrew Mattaon, a Swede, aged
about 30 years, made an almost suc
cessful effort lost evening to kill him
self. Matraon la a fisherman, is mar
ried and has two children. He went
home yesterday afternoon and was
seated at the dinner table when the
suloUlal mania aelxed him. He jumped
from his chair, drew a large pocket
knife from his pocket and slashed his
throat. He then ran through the back
door of his house, which is lo East
Asltorla, and went about 100 yards
back on the hill, where he fell. Dr.
Rosenberg was summoned and at once
called Dr. Pilkington to his aid. Dr.
Pllklngton arrived about 30 minutes
after Mattson had used his knife, and
found the man to be In dangerous con
dition. The first slash made by him
had been one of . little consequence,
but the second time Mattson made a
fearful gash In Ma throat. He jabbed
the knife straight 4n and then slashed
to the left, severing tthe Adam's apple
and the windpipe. Dr. Pllklngton sew
ed up the wounds, and at 10; 30 last
nlirht Mattson seemed to be resting
easily. Whether or not he will recov
er cannot now be told, but Dr. Pllk
lngton think there 1s, a good chanc
for him lo pull through. Mattson a
very powerful fellow, .and when Dr.
Pllklngton first attempted hi examm
I ration of the man' throat the suf
ferer struck him a terrific blow, also
kicking him. The combined effort of
seven men were required to hold Matt
son. When he cut hi throat at : 7
o'clock, hht wife and children we. at
dinner wllih him. Mattson had been
drinking yesterday. Friend of the
man ay be was very erratic when un
der the Influence of liquor, and ft I
probable M spree was responsible for

county jail by Sheriff Ltnvllle and I
being cared for there. A far aa can
be learned, there" was no cause for
the attempted suicide.
