THE MORNING ASTORIAN. SUNDAY, JULY 27 1002 CIVIC IMPROVEMENT COLUMN ; jv: ITEMS TO FILL THIS COLUMN REQUEST- f" TJT ED FROM FRIENDS F THE MOVEMENT ' , The loenl interest in dvlo Improve ment work has not died out by any means. A very novel method of ex citing Inter! and circulating tdes regarding this work were adopted by Mis Gearhart , on Wednesday last. About IS guests were Invited to her house to meet Mrs. Kronqulst, for- ' merlv one of the prominent members of the Presbyterian church, who is on a visit to her former home hem Plirs of paper were passed to each giiost, with the request that they write what Utey considered would be for the beat Interest of ' the city. In the line of civic Improvement. After the had been written, other slips were passed, on which was written Svlc Improve ment League." From these letters a game of word building was played. The very suggestive prise, a waste paper bask was won by Mr. J. E. Hlgglns who succeeded in building more wonls than any othr lady in the allotted time, 15 minutes. A very pertinent and witty little poem, de tailing the use of the bask?t accom panled the gift. The following are some of the nany things suggested to the Civic Im provement League as of prime Im portance to be done: Trees planted for shade on each side of the streets; a city park; photo graph the back of some of the build ings along the waterfront and present them to the owners.. Attempt to beautify our own homes. Keep the streets clean and tear down the old useless! houses. Newcomers find the city front view anything but fetching, I would like to have the tldewalk fixed on Ninth street.
